NFL, union talk for two hours, scheduled to meet this week

The NFL and its players' union met for two hours Saturday in Dallas to talk about a new labor deal, their first formal bargaining session since Nov. 22.

The sides issued a joint statement, saying they "plan to increase the number, length and intensity" of sessions so they can reach an agreement before the collective bargaining agreement expires March 4. Two sessions have been scheduled for this week.

There was no indication whether any substantive progress was made. Spokesmen declined to comment.

Also: Linebacker Eddie Jones tackled Damien Berry at the 1-yard line on fourth down with 55 seconds left, helping Team Texas hold on for a 13-7 victory over Team Nation in the NFLPA All-Star Game in San Antonio. The game featured players eligible for the NFL Draft.

UNLV women's basketball team ripped by first-place BYU, 79-42

UNLV fell behind 20-3 and was routed by Brigham Young 79-42 in a women's Mountain West Conference basketball game at Cox Pavilion.

After taking a 2-0 lead, the Lady Rebels went scoreless for the next seven minutes, missing 10 straight field-goal attempts, to fall behind 20-3 with 10:28 left in the first half. BYU stretched the lead to 34-8 with 6:09 left.

Center Markiell Styles led UNLV (9-14, 2-7 MWC) with 13 points and 13 rebounds. The Lady Rebels shot a season-low 21.8 percent from the field (12 of 55) and made only 17 of 36 free throws. They committed 23 turnovers.

The first-place Cougars (16-7, 8-1) shot 50 percent from the field (31 of 62), including 9 of 19 on 3-pointers.

Also: The UNLV men's tennis team blanked Southern Mississippi 7-0 at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

Johannes Markel won at No. 1 singles and teamed with Bernard Schoeman to win at No. 1 doubles to lead the Rebels, who have won five of their last six matches and are 5-2 this season.

The UNLV track and field team won three events and took second at the Northern Arizona Team Challenge in Flagstaff, Ariz. The Rebels finished with 85 points, two behind Northern Arizona.

Ashley Henry won the high jump at 5 feet 7 inches, Chelsea Cassulo took the weight throw in 62-6 and Lauren Petersen finished first in the 3,000-meter run in 10:50.95.

The 22nd-ranked College of Southern Nevada baseball team defeated Scottsdale (Ariz.) Community College 5-3 and 10-1 at Morse Stadium. Sam Wolff won the first game and Taylor Jones the second for CSN (4-3), and Cameron Harper had five hits in the sweep.

The College of Southern Nevada softball team went 1-1 on the second day of the Great Western Shootout at Yuma, Ariz. The Coyotes (7-7) defeated Phoenix College 10-6 in nine innings, then lost to Arizona Western, 8-5. Tiffini Lucero went 6-for-7 for the day.

Former major league pitcher Fryman, 70, dies in Kentucky

Woodie Fryman, who pitched 18 seasons in the major leagues and was inducted into the Montreal Expos' Hall of Fame in 1995, died Friday night in Ewing, Ky. He was 70.

Fryman won 141 games from 1966 to 1983 with the Expos, Pittsburgh Pirates, Philadelphia Phillies, Detroit Tigers, Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs. He pitched primarily in relief late in his career.

Also: The Minnesota Twins agreed to terms with left-hander Francisco Liriano on a one-year, $4.3 million deal that avoids arbitration. Liriano, 27, went 14-10 with a 3.62 ERA for the Twins last season.

Steve Lavin's first visit to Pauley Pavilion as an opposing coach began with hugs but ended with a loss, as his St. John's basketball team fell to UCLA, 66-59. Lavin coached the Bruins for seven years, going 145-78, before getting fired in 2003. He spent the entire pregame warmup greeting and hugging UCLA officials and old friends.

Suspended Michigan State junior guard Korie Lucious said he's considering transferring to Iowa State. Lucious, suspended for the rest of the season for conduct detrimental to the program, visited Iowa State this weekend. He is a friend of former Spartans guard Chris Allen, who transferred to the Cyclones last summer after he was kicked off the team.

The New York Knicks hired veteran NBA executive Mark Warkentien as director of pro player personnel. Warkentien, most recently with the Denver Nuggets, worked for 11 years in basketball operations at UNLV.

Australian Open winner Kim Clijsters defeated Melanie Oudin 6-0, 6-4, and Yanina Wickmayer beat Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-1, 7-6 (6) to give Belgium a 2-0 lead over the United States in a first-round Fed Cup matchup in Antwerp, Belgium.

Pittsburgh Penguins star center Evgeni Malkin has two torn ligaments in his right knee and probably won't be back anytime soon. It's unclear whether he will need surgery. After missing the previous five games, Malkin came back Friday but was injured in a 3-2 home victory over the Buffalo Sabres.
