Judge OKs tape of Bonds trainer allegedly discussing steroid use
A federal judge in the perjury case against Barry Bonds on Tuesday decided to allow an audio recording in which, prosecutors say, the baseball star's personal trainer discussed his steroids use.
Bonds' lawyers had asked the judge to exclude the recording from his trial in San Francisco on charges that he lied to a grand jury when he said he never knowingly took performance-enhancing drugs. They argued that since the personal trainer, Greg Anderson, is refusing to testify, there's no way to authenticate the topic of discussion.
But prosecutors plan on calling to the witness stand Stevie Hoskins, Bonds' childhood friend and former business partner. Hoskins said he secretly recorded the conversation in March 2003 to convince Bonds' father that his son was taking steroids.
The trial is scheduled to start March 21.
The judge also on Tuesday refused to throw out one of the five charges alleging Bonds lied to a grand jury in December 2003 when he testified he never knowingly took steroids.
His lawyers complained that the charge was too vague. The charge alleges Bonds' testimony obstructed the grand jury's investigation into sports doping.
The judge ruled the charge was specific enough for Bonds to mount a defense during his month-long trial.

UCLA basketball seeks venues during renovation of Pauley
UCLA officials hope to determine within two to three weeks where the men's basketball team will play its home games next season.
Historic Pauley Pavilion will close on April 1 as it undergoes $136 million in renovations and won't be reopened until the 2012-13 season.
UCLA sent season-ticket holders and fans who bought single-game tickets a survey to determine which arenas they would prefer the Bruins to play in for the 2011-12 season.
Their options included the Los Angeles Sports Arena, Staples Center, Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., and Citizens Bank Arena in Ontario, Calif.
Harlan said the Bruins would most likely play their 18 home games at several venues, depending on their availability.
Also: CBS College Sports (Cox Digital 333) will be renamed CBS Sports Network in April.
The cable channel will keep its focus on college sports, but the new name opens the possibility of airing other events in the future.
Formerly known as CSTV, the network was acquired by CBS in 2006. It was renamed CBS College Sports Network two years later.
The channel is in about 35 percent of the nation's homes with televisions.

Former Ohio State quarterback Art Schlichter made a brief court appearance in Columbus, Ohio, on a charge of stealing more than $1 million from a 68-year-old woman. Schlichter then returned to jail.
By waiving a preliminary hearing and passing on having a bond set, Schlichter also has set the stage for additional state and federal charges to be filed.
Schlichter, 50, appeared in Franklin County Municipal Court in a jail uniform and wearing handcuffs. Judge Anne Taylor agreed to his requests to waive the hearing and pass on bond. Schlichter is on probation from similar charges in Indiana and would have remained jailed anyway, said his attorney, Sam Shamansky.
All-Star defenseman Dustin Byfuglien signed a five-year, $26 million contract extension with the Atlanta Thrashers. Byfuglien leads the Thrashers with 43 points and leads all NHL defensemen with 17 goals.
