Georgia running back Ealey
hit with indefinite suspension

Georgia coach Mark Richt suspended tailback Washaun Ealey on Tuesday for failing to follow "the Georgia way."

Ealey, Georgia's leading rusher last season, can't participate in team activities and is barred from team facilities during the suspension. Richt placed no time frame on the suspension but left the door open for Ealey's return.

"We have certain expectations and standards that apply to all our student-athletes," Richt said in a statement. "We expect them to do things the right way, the Georgia way. If Washaun does things the Georgia way, he'll be back in good standing."

Richt's statement did not disclose specifics of what led to the suspension for Ealey, who is not new to the coach's doghouse.

Ealey was suspended for the 2010 opening game following his arrest for driving with a suspended license and leaving the scene of an accident.

Despite missing the game, Ealey led Georgia with 811 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns as a sophomore.

Also: Virginia coach Mike London suspended three players indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the team.

Junior linebacker Ausar Walcott started in 11 of 12 games last season, junior cornerback Devin Wallace started seven games and junior center Mike Price appeared in two games.

Kansas wide receiver Chris Omigie, who played in 10 games last season, is scheduled to appear in court next week after being arrested on a drunken driving charge early Saturday in Lawrence, Kan.

Kansas associate athletic director Jim Marchiony said Omigie is still a member of the team and that coach Turner Gill will handle discipline internally.

Mississippi coach Houston Nutt said receiver Jesse Grandy is leaving the program after the spring semester because of a family illness.

Grandy, a 5-foot-10-inch, 165-pound sophomore, caught 20 passes for 224 yards and a touchdown last season. But his real value was on special teams, as he returned 30 kickoffs for 627 yards and 15 punts for 220 yards and a touchdown.

Montana coach Robin Pflugrad announced the return of assistant coach Ty Gregorak. Gregorak coached linebackers at Montana from 2003 to 2009 and served as the Grizzlies' recruiting coordinator in 2009.

He accompanied coach Bobby Hauck to UNLV but was relieved of his duties there last spring after an alleged incident in Boulder, Colo. All charges were eventually dismissed, and Gregorak coached tight ends at Central Washington last season.

Devils goaltender Brodeur
shelved with right knee injury

The New Jersey Devils are going to have to make do without goaltender Martin Brodeur for a little while.

Brodeur has a sprained right knee, and though the injury will not require surgery, general manager Lou Lamoriello refused to say much more than that.

Lamoriello said Brodeur will need to rehabilitate the knee, but there is no timetable for his return.

Also: Elisabeth Goergl of Austria won the super-G in the opening race of alpine skiing's world championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, and American star Lindsey Vonn, returning from a concussion, finished seventh.

Goergl mastered an icy course that produced several crashes, clocking 1 minute, 23.82 seconds over the 7,152-foot course. Julia Mancuso of the United States took the silver, and Maria Riesch of Germany was third.

Defending champion Vonn skied despite sustaining a concussion during training last week in Austria.

Oregon pitcher Tyler Anderson, a former Spring Valley High School standout, was named to Baseball America's Preseason All-America third team. The left-handed starter has been named to four collegiate baseball publications' preseason All-America squads.

Alberto Contador submitted his final defense to overturn a proposed one-year ban for a positive doping test during the Tour de France. Contador supplied more documentation to Spanish cycling authorities to demonstrate his positive test for clenbuterol from contaminated meat was due to "no fault or negligence."

Contador could be stripped of his third Tour title and miss out on this year's race if the one-year suspension is upheld.

David Beckham extended his training with English Premier League team Tottenham by another two weeks.

The 35-year-old midfielder will begin preseason training with the Los Angeles Galaxy on Feb. 24 in preparation for the Major League Soccer season.

Tottenham's attempt to sign Beckham on loan last month faltered. But manager Harry Redknapp said he could try again when Beckham's contract with the Galaxy expires in November.

Georgia Tech basketball player Brian Oliver, the team's third-leading scorer at 10.9 points per game, will have surgery for a broken left thumb. The sophomore forward is expected to miss three weeks.
