Logano hopes Pocono
victory silences critics
Joey Logano slipped under Mark Martin in the closing laps Sunday at Pocono Raceway for his first victory since 2009 to become the first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver this season to win from the pole.
The 22-year-old Logano rallied past the 53-year-old Martin for a thrilling finish in the first 400-mile Cup race at the racetrack in Long Pond, Pa. Pocono shortened the race by 100 miles this season.
Logano's only previous career Cup victory was a rain-shortened win at New Hampshire. Logano had the top car all weekend, posting the fastest practice time Friday and then taking the pole Saturday.
Tony Stewart was third, Jimmie Johnson fourth and Denny Hamlin fifth.
Logano, once a much-hyped phenom when he broke in with Joe Gibbs Racing, was under pressure to produce victories in the final year of his four-year contract.
Logano's win continues a recent uptick of solid results in the Cup series. He has insisted this season his contract status has not added pressure.
But in Victory Lane, he hoped the victory sent a message to his critics.
"I hope it shuts them all up," he said. "It means a whole lot."
Also: Lewis Hamilton claimed the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, becoming the seventh different winner in the first seven races of the season - an unprecedented display of parity on the Formula One circuit.
Romain Grosjean was second to the McLaren Mercedes and Sergio Perez was third, followed by Sebastian Vettel.
The safety car did not come out at all during the race at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. This year marked the 30th anniversary of the crash that killed Villeneuve, the city's beloved Formula One driver.

Recovered from injury,
Johnson wins St. Jude
Dustin Johnson won the St. Jude Classic in Memphis, Tenn. - his second event back after a back injury sidelined him nearly three months - shooting a 4-under 66 to beat John Merrick by a stroke.
Johnson birdied Nos. 16 and 17 and closed with a par to finish at 9-under 271. He earned $1,008,000 for his sixth PGA Tour title.
Johnson aggravated his back in early March lifting a jet ski at his home and didn't return to the PGA Tour until last week at the Memorial, where he tied for 19th.
Merrick finished with a 68.
U.S. Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III shot 69 to tie for third with former UNLV standout Chad Campbell, Nick O'Hern and Ryan Palmer at 7 under. Rory McIlroy, the defending champion this week in the U.S. Open, closed with a double bogey for a 69 that left him in a tie for seventh at 6 under.
Also: Shanshan Feng captured the LPGA Championship in Pittsford, N.Y., to become the first Chinese player to win an LPGA Tour title and a major event, closing with a 5-under 67 for a two-stroke victory.
The 22-year-old Feng, the only player from China on the tour, had the lowest round of the tournament at the right time and finished at 6-under 282.
Stacy Lewis, bidding to win her third straight stroke-play event on the LPGA Tour, shot a 70 to tie for second with Mika Miyazato (69), Suzann Pettersen (70) and third-round leader Eun-Hee Ji (72).

Lehman finished at 14-under 275. Langer and Lu shot 66 to tie for second.
Britain-Ireland rallied to beat the United States 10½-9½ in the Curtis Cup in Nairn, Scotland, ending the Americans' 16-year domination of the biennial women's amateur matches.

Opening statements set
today in Sandusky trial
The trial of Jerry Sandusky, which begins today when prosecutors and his lawyer make opening statements before a jury in the central Pennsylvania town of Bellefonte, will probably be over in a few weeks.
But when it comes to getting to the bottom of what happened, it will definitely not be the final word.
Testimony in the child sex abuse case will focus on the 52 counts and 10 accusers for which the 68-year-old former Penn State assistant football coach could, if convicted, spend the rest of his life behind the bars of a state prison.
There are many other questions, however, being asked in a number of forums that would have to be answered for the complete story to come to light.
First and foremost, the state attorney general's office has repeatedly indicated it has an "active and ongoing" related investigation, and the mere existence of the open investigation suggests additional criminal charges could result.
Also: Brian Banks, the former high school football star at Long Beach Poly who was recently exonerated in a California rape case in which he was falsely accused, has accepted the offer of Seattle coach Pete Carroll and will get a formal tryout with the Seahawks during their upcoming minicamp.
Banks, 26, served more than five years in prison.
Banks' agent, Bruce Tollner confirmed that after flying to Kansas City for a workout with the Chiefs, Banks will return to the Pacific Northwest and take part in the Seahawks' minicamp.
A woman who accused former Denver Broncos cornerback Perrish Cox of sexual assault filed a lawsuit seeking unspecified damages against Cox and current Broncos wide receiver Demaryius Thomas.
The woman's lawyer, Craig Silverman, said he filed the lawsuit electronically. A jury in March acquitted Cox of all charges and Cox then signed a two-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers. Silverman said the lawsuit filed anonymously as "Jane Doe," allows the woman to prosecute the allegations in court.
'On behalf of our client, the victim, we will prosecute and prove these charges in a court of law," Silverman said in an email to The Associated Press.
