Women's golfers stand eighth
in Battle at Rancho Bernardo

The UNLV women's golf team was in eighth place Sunday after the first round of the 17-team Battle at Rancho Bernardo in San Diego.

UNLV shot 16-over 304, 11 strokes behind leader UCLA and just five strokes out of fifth place. Therese Koelbaek paced the Rebels with a 72, tied for sixth, with Arizona State's Giulia Molinaro leading after a 3-under 69.

UNLV's Ellis Keenan and Katerina Prorokova both shot 75, tied for 26th in the 94-player field.

The three-round event runs through Tuesday.

Also: The UNLV track and field team had 27 top-eight finishes Saturday at the Baldy Castillo Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., led by a win in the 4x100-meter relay. The foursome of Zadia Bryant, Secoral Yanez, Lindsay Roach and Davina Collins won in 46.43 seconds.

The UNLV softball team's game at Stanford was canceled due to rain, making the entire weekend a washout, as the Rebels didn't play any of five scheduled games in the Louisville Slugger Invitational.

Boxer Solis suffers knee injuries
in knockout loss to Klitschko

Odlanier Solis sustained serious knee injuries in his first-round knockout loss to WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko on Saturday in Berlin.

The 30-year-old Cuban was taken to the hospital, where a scan revealed tears to his anterior cruciate ligament and external meniscus, as well as cartilage damage in his right knee.

Also: Juniper Pass beat Dahoud by a half-length in the $150,000 San Luis Rey Stakes, a turf race moved to the muddy main track on a rainy day at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif.

Ridden for the first time by Rafael Bejarano, Juniper Pass took the lead at the top of the stretch and held off Dahoud in what became a virtual match race, covering 1½ miles on a sloppy track in 2 minutes, 32.64 seconds.

Juniper Pass is the 4-year-old son of Lemon Drop Kid.

Dallas Cowboys cornerback and special teams member Bryan McCann denied reports that he was intoxicated when arrested by Dallas police during the weekend.

WFAA-TV of Dallas and Fort Worth reported early Sunday that the former Southern Methodist star was arrested early Saturday, charged with public intoxication, taken to the Dallas city detox center about 3 a.m. and released almost eight hours later. Dallas police have not released the details behind the arrest.

McCann issued a statement that he "was not intoxicated and did not pose a danger" to himself or others.

Alabama safety Mark Barron was arrested in Mobile, Ala., on charges of hindering prosecution, a misdemeanor charge. No additional details were available. Barron led the team with 75 tackles last season.

Yale earned the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA hockey tournament.

The Bulldogs were joined by North Dakota, Boston College and Miami of Ohio as the top seeds in the bracket.

Denver, led by Las Vegan Jason Zucker, got the No. 2 seed in the Midwest Region in the 16-team tournament.

Cole Cabrera of Exeter, Calif., and Robert Ewing of Las Vegas won Super Late Models 40-lap features Saturday on opening night of the NASCAR All-American Series at Las Vegas Motor Speedway's Bullring.

Other winners were Vinny Raucci (Chargers), Pete Meyer (Bombers), Travis Boyle (Thunder Roadsters), and Kyle Weatherman and C.J. Hulsey (Legends Cars).

Chelsea boosted its slim chances of retaining the English Premier League title by beating Manchester City 2-0 in London. Chelsea moved into third place, nine points behind leader Manchester United.

Markos Geneti set a Los Angeles Marathon record, winning in his debut at 26.2 miles, and Buzunesh Deba won the women's event to give Ethiopia a sweep. Geneti won in 2:06:35, and Deba clocked 2:26:34.
