Fox Sports files objection over
proposed sale of Dodgers
Fox Sports is objecting to the proposed sale of the Los Angeles Dodgers, saying the incoming ownership group that includes Magic Johnson has not disclosed whether Time Warner Cable is involved in the purchase.
Fox's Prime Ticket subsidiary filed the objection Tuesday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware. It asked for written assurance that Time Warner wasn't contributing funds being used for Guggenheim Baseball Management's purchase of the team from Frank McCourt and that the incoming owners don't have any formal or informal agreements for the team's broadcast rights starting in 2014.
Fox asked that it be given parts of the purchase agreement that were not filed with the court.
"Our filing today was a routine administrative filing to ensure our rights are protected," Fox Sports spokesman Chris Bellitti said.
Fox, the Dodgers' current broadcaster, has an exclusive 45-day period starting in October to try to negotiate a new contract with the team. The current contract also prohibits the Dodgers from talking to other potential buyers of the media rights before Nov. 30 and gives Fox a limited right of first refusal on competing offers received after that date.
Major League Baseball also filed an objection, saying not enough money had been set aside to satisfy what it is owed by the Dodgers. While the Dodgers have put aside $322,065 for MLB's claims, the league said it was owed at least $8 million as of Feb. 22.
A hearing to confirm the sale agreement is scheduled for Friday before U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Kevin Gross.
Also: The Cincinnati Reds made another significant financial commitment, giving All-Star second baseman Brandon Phillips a six-year, $72.5 million contract. That came only five days after former National League Most Valuable Player Joey Votto got 10 years and $225 million added to his deal.
Catcher Carlos Santana signed a five-year, $21 million contract with the Cleveland Indians, who locked up one of their core players through the 2016 season. The deal includes a club option for 2017.
Oakland Athletics reliever Joey Devine will miss the season after having reconstructive surgery on his right elbow for the second time in three years. The operation was the latest setback for the 28-year-old, already on the disabled list with biceps tendinitis.
San Diego Padres pitcher Dustin Moseley's right shoulder has "extensive damage," according to manager Bud Black. Moseley was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with a strained right shoulder, a day after allowing five runs against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Black said the damage was found by an MRI.
In other Padres news, owner John Moores is putting the team up for sale, retaining a pair of investment bankers to seek a new owner for the franchise.
David Wright has a broken right pinky and was removed from the New York Mets' starting lineup before Tuesday's game against Washington.
Manager Terry Collins said Wright told him he hurt the finger diving to a base during the Mets' 4-3 win over Washington on Monday night.

to keep star guard Williams
New Jersey Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov met with Deron Williams to discuss his future with the NBA team, but the Russian tycoon refused to say whether the All-Star guard gave any indication whether he would stay with the club after this season.
Prokhorov said the two met Monday, adding both have a tremendous desire to win, which is something the Nets have not done enough of this season. They are on the verge of missing the playoffs for the fifth straight season.
Also: Ricky Rubio said he is not sure if his surgically repaired left knee will be ready in time for training camp with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Rubio spoke to reporters about his rehabilitation from the torn anterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments in his left knee that cut short a promising season for the rookie point guard from Spain and the up-and-coming Timberwolves.
Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge traveled to Vail, Colo., to have his sore right hip examined. Aldridge had an MRI on the hip late last month, but the results were negative. He has blamed the soreness on the grind of the lockout-shortened season and physical play.
