Pacquiao-Margarito fight nets
1.15 million pay-per-view buys

Manny Pacquiao is not simply the best boxer in the world. He's also the sport's biggest box office attraction.

Pacquiao's comprehensive destruction of Antonio Margarito for a vacant junior middleweight title on Nov. 13 at Cowboys Stadium generated at least 1.15 million buys and $64 million domestic revenue, according to figures announced Tuesday by HBO Sports.

The number is expected to increase slightly once all the figures are counted, but Pacquiao is assured of his third straight year with at least one fight breaking the 1 million mark.

HBO vice president Mark Taffet said the numbers were "not even on the spreadsheet" when he considered how well the Pacquiao-Margarito fight would do.

UNLV's Ernst finishes sixth
in College All-America tourney

UNLV senior Derek Ernst fired a 5-under-par 66 in the final round of the Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic to finish sixth at the elite event in El Paso, Texas.

Ernst posted a 6-under 207 total in the three-round tournament, jumping seven spots with his final-round effort. San Diego's Alex Ching won at 12-under 201, turning in three consecutive 67s.

Georgia Tech's J.T. Griffin and Claremont Mudd Scripps' Tain Lee tied for second at 204.

The field featured 32 of the nation's top college golfers, including seven of the top 11 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings.

Also: Martin Kaymer said he will not join the U.S. PGA Tour next year and plans to stick with the European PGA Tour.

The winner of the PGA Championship said he talked it over with his family and manager and concluded that trying to compete on both tours was not possible.

The German, ranked third in the world, said he will play several U.S. events but called the European Tour "his home" and said he feels "comfortable in Europe."

Kaymer is eligible for a five-year exemption for winning a major. His girlfriend is from Arizona, and the German spent time there before his breakthrough win at the PGA.

One person hospitalized after
fire at Kansas athletic facility

Authorities in Lawrence, Kan., said a fire in the heating and air-conditioning system at a University of Kansas sports facility sent one person to the hospital for minor smoke inhalation, but caused no damage inside the building.

Flames and heavy smoke were reported around 10:40 a.m. Tuesday at the southwest corner of the Anderson Family Strength and Conditioning Center.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze at the complex, which houses weight rooms, an indoor track and artificial turf surface. The facility is just west of Allen Fieldhouse, the Jayhawks' renowned basketball arena.

A university spokeswoman said the fire won't affect any athletic events.

The Buffalo Sabres will be without starting goalie Ryan Miller and center Tim Connolly for their home game against the Pittsburgh Penguins tonight.

Both have groin injuries and were ruled out by coach Lindy Ruff.
