Federer rolls past Djokovic
to claim Swiss Indoors title

Roger Federer reclaimed his hometown title from Novak Djokovic, beating the defending champion 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 in the Swiss Indoors final Sunday in Basel, Switzerland.

The top-seeded Federer broke the Serb's serve early in the first and twice in the third set to cruise to victory in under two hours. Federer's 65th career singles title moved him past Pete Sampras into sole possession of fourth on the list in the modern era. Jimmy Connors leads with 109.

A former ballboy at the tournament, Federer won three straight Swiss Indoors titles from 2006 to 2008 before Djokovic broke the streak when they met in last year's final.

Also: Ana Ivanovic ended her season by returning to the top 20 with a 6-2, 7-6 (5) victory over Alisa Kleybanova of Russia in the Tournament of Champions final in Bali, Indonesia. The 23-year-old Serb captured her second title in three weeks to move back into the top 20 for the first time in more than a year, having dropped to a low of 65 in July.

David Ferrer beat Marcel Granollers 7-5, 6-3 to win the Valencia Open in Valencia, Spain, virtually ensuring himself a spot in the season-ending ATP Tour finals.

Ferrer's second title of the season and ninth of his career moved him ahead of Andy Roddick and into seventh place in the points standings. The top eight qualify for this month's season-ending ATP World Tour Finals in London, with this week's Paris Masters the final qualifying tournament.

Jockeys Borel, Castellano
disciplined following fight

Jockey Calvin Borel was fined and fellow rider Javier Castellano was fined and suspended for six days after a fight in the winner's circle Friday at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.

The Kentucky Board of Stewards fined Borel $5,000 and Castellano $2,500 for their fight after the conclusion of the Breeders' Cup Marathon.

Castellano was also banned from riding Nov. 11 to 14 and Nov. 16 and 17 for causing interference aboard Prince Will I Am during the race that nearly sent rider Martin Garcia tumbling and blunted Borel's momentum aboard A.U. Miner.

Borel approached Castellano shortly after the race, setting off a chaotic scene in which the two riders traded blows and Borel had to be restrained by several security officials. He later apologized.

Also: Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Awesome Feather cashed in again, this time going for $2.3 million at auction to American buyer, breeder and racetrack owner Frank Stronach.

Owner Fred Brei put the winning filly up for sale at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale after Awesome Feather won Friday at Churchill Downs.

UNLV women's basketball set
for lone preseason contest

The UNLV women's basketball team plays its only exhibition game of the season at 5:30 p.m. today, hosting Grand Canyon at Cox Pavilion.

Coach Kathy Olivier, in her third season with the Lady Rebels, brings back her entire starting lineup, including senior guard Erica Helms.

UNLV opens the regular season Friday with a 5 p.m. tipoff against Southern Utah, part of a doubleheader with the UNLV men's team at the Thomas & Mack Center.

Also: North Carolina lost leading rusher Johnny White for the season with a broken collarbone. The senior running back was hurt in the first half of Saturday's win at Florida State.

White earned a leading role in the offense when tailbacks Shaun Draughn and Ryan Houston were held out of the opener against Louisiana State because of an ongoing NCAA investigation. White ran for 720 yards and a team-best seven touchdowns this season.

The United States fell to Italy in second-round group play, ending its 17-game winning streak and dropping its first match at the women's volleyball world championships in Nagoya, Japan.

The European champions improved to 3-2 with the 25-16, 24-26, 27-25, 27-25 win. The U.S. is 4-1.

Fernando Torres rediscovered his scoring touch, netting two goals as host Liverpool stunned English Premier League leader Chelsea 2-0 and moved into the top half of the standings.

Liverpool's worst start to a season in more than 50 years left the club in the relegation zone last month, but three straight wins have lifted the 18-time champion to ninth in the standings.

Chelsea is two points ahead of Manchester United and five ahead of third-place Arsenal, which lost 1-0 to Newcastle in London.
