Stress fracture will sideline Rockets' Yao for rest of season

Houston Rockets center Yao Ming will miss the rest of the season because of a stress fracture in his left ankle.

The Rockets made the announcement Friday, a day after the injury was found in an MRI exam. Team physician Walter Lowe said surgery is the usual treatment for such an injury, which has sidelined Yao since Nov. 10.

Yao, 30, is consulting with doctors to determine how he will proceed. If he chooses surgery, he could miss up to 10 months.

The seven-time All-Star, averaging 10.2 points and 5.4 rebounds in five games this season, missed last season after reconstructive surgery to repair his broken left foot. Lowe said this injury is related to last year's.

Also: Michigan State coach Tom Izzo will serve a one-game suspension today for a secondary violation of NCAA rules related to a summer basketball camp.

Michigan State officials said the school employed someone associated with a potential recruit during a basketball camp in June. The person was paid $475 for five days of working with middle school-aged campers.

Izzo will sit out the No. 14 Spartans' game today against Prairie View A&M, with associate head coach Mark Montgomery running the team.
