Gorman's Muhammad scores
record 35 in Nike Hoop Summit

Bishop Gorman High School boys basketball star Shabazz Muhammad set a Nike Hoop Summit record with 35 points Saturday night, but the USA Junior Select team lost to the World Select team 84-75 at the Rose Garden in Portland, Ore.

Muhammad, a senior wing, shot 12-for-27 from the floor and grabbed nine rebounds. He made a 3-pointer midway through the fourth quarter to clinch the scoring record in the event, which began in 1995. The previous record of 34 points belonged to current Utah Jazz center Enes Kanter.

Findlay Prep senior forward Anthony Bennett, from Brampton, Ontario, hit a 3-pointer in the final minute to give the World team an 81-75 lead as part of a 10-0 run to close the game. Bennett had seven points and 11 rebounds.

Muhammad and Bennett are undecided on where they will play in college. Muhammad's father, Ron Holmes, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal on Thursday that Muhammad would announce his choice Wednesday, when the NCAA's spring signing period begins. Muhammad is considering UCLA, Kentucky and Duke, with UCLA and Kentucky reportedly emerging as the favorites.

Also: Former UNLV basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian has been released from a hospital more than two weeks after suffering a heart attack, son Danny Tarkanian said.

Tarkanian's family released a photo late Friday of the 81-year-old painting Easter eggs with his grandchildren. Before his release, he had been transferred to a rehabilitation center at MountainView Hospital.

Tarkanian suffered the heart attack March 20, when he began wheezing during a doctor's visit. He remained hospitalized so doctors could monitor his blood-oxygen levels.

Texas Christian is expected to hire Trent Johnson as its basketball coach. He has spent the past four seasons at Louisiana State, where he was 67-64, including 18-15 this past season. He also has coached at UNR and Stanford, taking both schools to the NCAA Tournament's round of 16.

Johnson would replace Jim Christian, who took the Ohio University job.

Filmmaker defends release of
recording before Saints' game

Documentary filmmaker Sean Pamphilon said he had the right to release a recording of then-New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams exhorting his players to physically punish targeted San Francisco 49ers players in an NFL playoff game in January.

In a statement posted on his website, Pamphilon said he and former Saints special teams standout Steve Gleason "have a production agreement that I have followed."

Gleason, who has ALS, had been allowing Pamphilon to document his struggle against the incurable disease. The Saints gave Pamphilon behind-the-scenes access, which allowed him to record Williams' speech before New Orleans' loss to the 49ers. Gleason said Friday he never gave Pamphilon permission to release the recording.

Also: Former NFL star Warren Sapp owes more than $6.7 million to creditors and back child support and alimony, according to a Chapter 7 bankruptcy filing in South Florida. Sapp's average monthly income is $115,881, according to the filings.
