Brewers' Narveson might need surgery to repair left shoulder

Milwaukee Brewers left-hander Chris Narveson was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a tear in his rotator cuff, an injury that might require surgery.

Narveson, the Brewers' No. 5 starter, hopes his injury won't need more than some rest to heal, but he's also preparing for the possibility of surgery. "You're always hopeful, but it all depends on what the doctor says," he said.

Right-hander Marco Estrada will start today's game against Colorado in Narveson's place. Narveson is seeking a second opinion and said he hasn't discussed the possibility of surgery with the team doctor.

Also: Cleveland Indians closer Chris Perez might appeal a $750 fine from Major League Baseball for a "reckless" Twitter message after a bench-clearing scuffle last weekend in Kansas City.

Perez wants an explanation about what is acceptable on Twitter, the pitcher said. "If I crossed the line, fine, but what's the line?" he said.

After batters for the Indians and Royals were hit by pitches, touching off two bench-clearing dustups April 14, Perez posted a message: @chrisperez54, that said: "Huge team win tonight; time for a sweep to tell the Royals it's not 'Our Time', it's #TribeTime. P.S. You hit us, we hit you. Period."

On Wednesday, Perez received a fine and was told he "demonstrated a reckless disregard for the safety of the players on both clubs."

Cook County prosecutors said they will not file charges against Chicago Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro for criminal sexual assault. Castro, 21, cooperated with authorities, and his attorneys have said the allegations are baseless.

Djokovic, Nadal, Berdych, Simon make Monte Carlo semis

Novak Djokovic dropped serve four times before beating Robin Haase 6-4, 6-2 to reach the Monte Carlo Masters semifinals, saying he had thought about pulling out of the event after his grandfather's death.

Minnesota lawmakers revive Vikings stadium measure

A Minnesota Senate committee narrowly approved a public subsidy to help the Vikings build a football stadium, reviving the team's struggling effort just hours after NFL commissioner Roger Goodell visited the state Capitol to jumpstart what had been a stalled stadium debate.

The Senate's Local Government and Elections Committee passed the bill 8-6 after a hearing that stretched nearly four hours. While the stadium bill still faces a long haul in the waning days of Minnesota's legislative session, the committee's vote gave the $975 million stadium proposal new life.

Goodell and Pittsburgh Steelers owner Art Rooney II met with Gov. Mark Dayton and legislative leaders to stress the urgency of resolving the Vikings' pursuit of a replacement for the Metrodome.

Howard is done for the season and will miss the summer Olympics, but the team doctor said he was doing well and is expected to make a complete recovery in four months. The surgery was performed by Dr. Robert Watkins of Marina Del Ray, Calif.
