Giants closer Wilson to have reconstructive elbow surgery

San Francisco Giants All-Star closer Brian Wilson will undergo Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery today in Pensacola, Fla.

Renowned elbow specialist Dr. James Andrews will perform the surgery, having done a similar procedure on Wilson when the right-hander was at Louisiana State in 2003. Andrews examined Wilson on Wednesday and confirmed the Giants' diagnosis of a torn ulnar collateral ligament that will sideline him all season.

Also: Cleveland pitcher Jeanmar Gomez was suspended for five games and fined by Major League Baseball, which concluded he intentionally threw at the Royals' Mike Moustakas last weekend.

Gomez hit Moustakas in the third inning of Cleveland's 11-9, 10-inning win at Kansas City on Saturday, causing benches to clear for the second time. Kansas City's Jonathan Sanchez plunked Cleveland's Shin-Soo Choo in the top half.

The Arizona Diamondbacks placed outfielder Chris Young and infielder Geoff Blum on the 15-day disabled list and brought up outfielder A.J. Pollock and infielder Cody Ransom.

New York Yankees left fielder Brett Gardner is going on the 15-day disabled list with an ailing right elbow. New York manager Joe Girardi said he thinks Gardner was injured while making a tumbling catch Tuesday against Minnesota. The speedster was a late scratch from the lineup Wednesday.

Catcher Ivan Rodriguez plans to announce his retirement Monday in Arlington, Texas, according to a person familiar with the arrangements. The decision would end a 21-year major league career that included a record 13 Gold Gloves.

Former major league outfielder Lenny Dykstra was sentenced to nine months in jail after pleading no contest to charges he exposed himself to women he met on Craigslist and assaulted one.

The UNLV baseball team lost to UC Riverside 13-5 in a nonconference game at Riverside, Calif. The Highlanders (12-18) led 7-0 after two innings.

Professional mixed martial arts is attempting another comeback in New York. The state Senate voted 43-14 to again approve legislation to make New York the 46th state to legalize and regulate the sport, though opposition remains in the Assembly.

The Assembly has beaten back legalization for seven years, recently keeping it out of the budget.

Also: Wranglers wing Ryan Weston was suspended for two games by the ECHL for leaving the bench during a second-period altercation in Las Vegas' 3-2 overtime playoff win against the Idaho Steelheads on Tuesday at Orleans Arena.

Weston will miss Games 3 and 4, today and Saturday in Boise, in the best-of-7 series, which the Wranglers lead 2-0.

Larry Brown is serious about getting back to coaching and the vacancy at Southern Methodist.

Brown said he hasn't been offered the job, but had spoken again with SMU athletic director Steve Orsini since they first met Monday. The 71-year-old Hall of Fame coach said he expected his longtime agent, Joe Glass, to have further conversations with Orsini.

SMU, moving from Conference USA to the much tougher Big East in 2013, fired Matt Doherty last month after six seasons.
