Athletics center field Cespedes
on DL with injured left hand

Yoenis Cespedes was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hand that has bothered the Oakland Athletics center fielder all week.

Cespedes complained of discomfort in his hand after taking batting practice Saturday and was scratched from the lineup shortly before the A's beat the visiting Detroit Tigers, 3-1. About an hour earlier in the clubhouse, Cespedes declared himself "100 percent" healthy and ready to return after missing the four previous games.

Cespedes signed a $36 million, four-year deal this spring after defecting from Cuba. He is batting .245 with five homers and 21 RBIs this season, mostly in the cleanup spot.

Also: The Chicago Cubs placed right-hander Carlos Marmol on the 15-day disabled list because of an injured hamstring.

Marmol was hurt Friday night while pitching during the seventh inning in a game against Milwaukee.

The Baltimore Orioles placed third baseman Mark Reynolds on the 15-day disabled list. Reynolds, batting .191 with two homers and nine RBIs, has a pulled muscle in his rib cage.

Cincinnati Reds third baseman Scott Rolen went back on the 15-day disabled list because of more soreness in his left shoulder, a chronic problem late in his career.

Cleveland Indians pitcher Josh Tomlin was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a sore right wrist. Tomlin had been scheduled to start Saturday night's game against Boston, but was scratched earlier in the day before the Indians placed him on the DL.
