Hawks will promote assistant
Drew to replace fired Woodson

Larry Drew, a former NBA player and current Atlanta Hawks assistant coach, will become the team's head coach, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Friday.

Drew, 52, was picked after a search that included interviews with former Minnesota coach Dwane Casey, who was thought to have the inside track because of his ties to Hawks general manager Rick Sund. Instead, the Hawks went with the lead assistant under former coach Mike Woodson, who was fired last month after six seasons despite a 53-29 record this season.

Drew is a former point guard who played in the NBA for 10 seasons. He was an assistant with the Los Angeles Lakers, Detroit, Washington and New Jersey before he joined Woodson in Atlanta.

Also: Michigan State coach Tom Izzo was still weighing an offer to become the coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Izzo sent a text message to the AP, saying he had not made a decision. He later told the Spartans the same thing and didn't give them a timetable for the decision.

Izzo has reportedly been offered a five-year, $30 million contract by Cavs owner Dan Gilbert, a Michigan State alum who wants to convince soon-to-be free agent LeBron James to re-sign with Cleveland.
