Zenyatta gallops to easy win,
joins elite class with 16-0 mark
Zenyatta improved to 16-0 with a 4¼-length victory in the Apple Blossom Invitational on Friday in Hot Springs, Ark., galloping effortlessly from behind in her usual running style.
The 6-year-old mare tied the modern record shared by 1948 Triple Crown winner Citation and 1995-96 Horse of the Year Cigar in unrestricted races.
Zenyatta beat four horses in the 1 1/8-mile race at Oaklawn Park that didn't include racing's other female superstar, Rachel Alexandra. Her owner passed on a chance to participate in what would have been a dream matchup worth $5 million if both horses had shown up. Without Rachel Alexandra, the purse reverted to $500,000, and Zenyatta won $300,000.
Sent off at 1-20 odds, Zenyatta finished in 1:50.71 and paid $2.10 and $2.10, rewarding holders of $2 win tickets with a 10-cent profit. There was no show wagering in the race, which drew a crowd of 44,973.
Also: Karelian won the $300,000 Maker's Mark Mile on the turf at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky., the first Grade 1 victory of his injury-marred career. The 8-year-old gelding paid $7.60, $3.20 and $2.80.
Personal Ensign, who capped an unbeaten career with a stirring victory in the 1988 Breeders' Cup Distaff, died Thursday of natural causes in Lexington, Ky. She was 26.
