Las Vegas' Gomez ties
for Mexican scoring title
Former Las Vegas High School standout Herculez Gomez became the first American player to win or share the Mexican league's regular-season scoring title.
Gomez tied for the Clausura lead with 10 goals for Puebla, matching Javier Hernandez of Chivas and Johan Fano of Atlante.
Hernandez has not played for Chivas in a month and Gomez was suspended from Puelba's final match after picking up two yellow cards last weekend.
Gomez, who was born in Los Angeles to Mexican-born parents and grew up in Las Vegas, played 758 minutes this season. Hernandez played 892 and Fano 1,168.

U.S. downs Russia
to reach Fed Cup final
Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Liezel Huber sent the United States into the Fed Cup final with a 6-3, 6-1 doubles win over Russia's Elena Dementieva and Alla Kudryavtseva in Birmingham, Ala.
The Americans will meet defending champion Italy for the second straight year in the final in November at an undetermined site in the United States. The U.S. has won a record 17 times.
Mattek-Sands beat Ekaterina Makarova 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 earlier to keep the U.S. title hopes alive. Dementieva's 7-6 (7-4), 0-6, 6-3 win over Melanie Oudin had put the Russians up 2-1.
Also: Kim Clijsters is projected to be out for up to six weeks after tearing a muscle in her left foot during a Fed Cup qualifying singles match Saturday.
The injury casts doubt on whether the U.S. Open champion will be able to play in next month's French Open.
Spain's Fernando Verdasco beat Robin Soderling of Sweden 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to win the Barcelona Open in Barcelona, Spain.

Former Golden State owner Mieuli dies
Franklin Mieuli, who for 24 years owned the Golden State Warriors as one of the most colorful owners in the history of the NBA, has died. He was 89.
The Warriors announced that Mieuli died of natural causes Sunday in a San Francisco Bay Area hospital.
Known for his omnipresent deerstalker caps, casual attire and substantial beard, Mieuli was the principal owner of the Warriors from the time they moved to the Bay Area in 1962 until he sold them in 1986.
His teams included the 1975 NBA title winners led by Rick Barry.
Also: ESPN's broadcast of the NFL Draft drew the most viewers ever.
With the first two rounds held in prime time for the first time, ESPN's three-day telecast had 3.7 million viewers, up 27 percent from 2009. It also attracted 2.85 million households, second most in draft history and up 24 percent from last year, according to Nielsen Media Research.
Eighth-ranked Texas Christian beat UNLV 7-1 in Fort Worth, Texas, to complete a three-game Mountain West Conference baseball series sweep.
Brandon Bayardi's eighth-inning double scored UNLV's (21-18, 5-7 MWC) lone one.
Conrad Stoltz and Shonny Vanlandingham claimed the men's and women's titles of the XTERRA West Championship off-road triathlon at Lake Las Vegas.
Stoltz, 36, of South Africa won with a time of 2 hours, 6 minutes, 47 seconds, beating second-place Josiah Middaugh, 31, of Vail, Colo., by 39 seconds.
Vanlandingham, 40, of Durango, Colo., took the women's crown with a time of 2:24.14, beating the second-place finisher by more than 4 minutes.
Marc Savard practiced with the Boston Bruins for the first time since sustaining a Grade 2 concussion on March 7.
