Florida State ousts UCLA, stays
alive in College World Series

Scott Sitz gave up five hits and struck out eight in a season-high 6 2/3 innings, and Florida State eliminated UCLA from the College World Series in Omaha, Neb., with a 4-1 victory Tuesday night.

Florida State (50-16) plays Arizona on Thursday, needing to beat the Wildcats twice to reach the championship round.

No. 2 national seed UCLA (48-16) was knocked out a day after No. 1 Florida was eliminated from the opposite bracket.

The Seminoles won without their designated hitter, John Holland, who was suspended after being arrested for shoplifting Monday at a local sporting goods store.

Also: Philadelphia Phillies rookie infielder Freddy Galvis was suspended 50 games by Major League Baseball for using a banned substance.

Galvis is on the disabled list with a back injury and will begin serving his suspension immediately. MLB said Galvis tested positive for a metabolite of Clostebol, a performance-enhancing substance. He was batting .226 with three home runs and 24 RBIs before injuring his back.

Ex-Saints DE Hargrove denies
saying, 'Give me the money'

Former New Orleans defensive end Anthony Hargrove said it's not his voice saying "Give me the money" in a video used by the NFL as evidence in its investigation of the Saints bounty program.

A day after Hargrove and three of his former teammates had appeals of their suspensions heard at NFL headquarters, he returned to the sidewalk outside the league offices in New York for an informal news conference.

On Monday, the NFL showed reporters a clip from the 2010 NFC Championship game in which Hargrove purportedly made the "money" comment about injuring then-Vikings quarterback Brett Favre. Hargrove insisted it was someone else uttering those words, though he said he didn't know who.

"I've never offered nor received money to intentionally hurt a player," said Hargrove, now with Green Bay, who was docked eight games.

Also: Prosecutors in Texas dropped a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Aqib Talib.

The decision was made a week before Talib, 26, was due to be tried for allegedly firing a gun at his sister's boyfriend during a March 2011 dispute in Garland, a Dallas suburb.

Former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf could spend 15 months locked down in Montana, first in a secure drug treatment facility and then in a pre-release living center as part of a judge's sentence following Leaf's guilty plea for breaking into a house and illegally possessing painkillers.

District Judge Kenneth Neill sentenced Leaf to seven years, with two years suspended if he abides by the conditions.

Bishop Gorman High School's lone loss from the 2011 football season has become the team's 17th win.

Armwood (Fla.), which beat the Gaels 20-17 at Gorman on Aug. 26, was ordered by the Florida High School Athletic Association to forfeit all of its 2010 and 2011 seasons because it used ineligible players.

The Gaels, who finished 17-0, will carry a 27-game winning streak into the start of the 2012 season.

Secretariat's winning time in the 1973 Preakness has been changed to reflect that the Triple Crown-winning colt's time was actually faster than the stakes record.

The Maryland Racing Commission voted 7-0 to change the official time of the race from 1:54 2/5 to 1:53. That gives Secretariat records in each of his three Triple Crown races - the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes - that still stand.

Wayne Rooney returned from suspension and scored on a header in the 48th minute to give England a 1-0 victory over Ukraine in a Group D match in Donetsk, Ukraine, and a spot in the European Championship quarterfinals.
