Oklahoma president: Sooners, Aggies offered SEC invitations

The president of the University of Oklahoma said Wednesday that his school and Texas A&M both received invitations to join the Southeastern Conference during the last round of conference realignment.

Although Oklahoma ended up remaining in the Big 12, university president David Boren said the Sooners had offers from both the SEC and the Pac-10. Boren spoke with reporters after a regents meeting for almost 40 minutes about the conference realignment process.

"I'll put it this way -- we were well positioned for whatever worked out," Boren said.

SEC spokesman Craig Pinkerton said he was "not in a position to comment" on what Boren said. Boren declined to say who in the SEC issued the invitation, only that the person had the authority to do so.

Also: The Summit League will begin evaluating North Dakota for possible membership and could send officials for a campus visit by the end of the year.

The league had said it would not consider UND until the school resolved the dispute over its Fighting Sioux nickname, which some, including the NCAA, find offensive. The state Board of Higher Education has since directed UND to begin retiring the nickname.

Redskins' Haynesworth faces more troubles off field than on

Albert Haynesworth apparently hasn't been living up to his end of the deal on or off the football field.

Haynesworth issued a statement saying he will report for training camp after staying away from the Washington Redskins all offseason while trying to force a trade, despite being paid a $21 million bonus in April.

Off the field, the defensive tackle faces three lawsuits and other legal filings.

A Tennessee bank is suing him for not paying a $2.38 million loan. His ex-wife, Stephanie, is back in court charging him with not paying her health insurance or their children's bills. A Tennessee man, Corey Edmonson, has his parents caring for him with his pending lawsuit that charges Haynesworth with wrecking his car in 2008.

Then there's the exotic dancer, Silvia Mena, suing Haynesworth in New York, saying he got her pregnant.

"He thinks he's above everything," his ex-wife said. "He feels like he's entitled. He's narcissistic. It's very frustrating to go to someone constantly and ask them repetitively to do the things they're already supposed to be doing."

Attorneys representing Haynesworth in the Edmonson case and his divorce did not return messages from The Associated Press. His ex-wife said Haynesworth was out of the country, and his agent declined to comment.

Also: The Baltimore Ravens agreed to terms on a one-year contract with quarterback Marc Bulger.

The deal will become complete if Bulger passes a physical.

Bulger spent the previous nine years of his career with the St. Louis Rams. The two-time Pro Bowler is expected to compete to be the backup to Joe Flacco.

Bulger has 27 games of at least 300 yards passing during his career. In 2008, he became the fifth-fastest quarterback in NFL history to reach the 20,000-yard passing milestone, doing so in only 81 games.

Three weeks after becoming an unrestricted free agent, veteran safety Oshiomogho Atogwe went back to his old team, the St. Louis Rams, agreeing on a multiyear deal. Terms were not disclosed, but Atogwe said it was a five-year contract.

Atogwe, who turned 29 on Wednesday, has started 60 of 72 career games.

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was a surprise visitor to the youth football camp he usually runs each summer in Mars, Pa., north of Pittsburgh.

Roethlisberger has run the camp at Mars Area High School the last two years, but begged off after offseason legal problems that saw him accused of rape at a Georgia nightclub in March. He was not prosecuted.

NFL agent Terry Bolar told The Associated Press he's reached a settlement with his former client, Buffalo Bills cornerback Terrence McGee, in a lawsuit in which the player alleged he was bilked out of more than $1 million.

Bolar said he's relieved, though he couldn't discuss details of the deal because of a confidentiality agreement.
