UNLV women's tennis
goes unbeaten at home

The UNLV women's tennis team capped a perfect home regular season by edging Texas Christian 4-3 on Saturday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

The Rebels, ranked 35th, improved to 17-3 overall, including 16-0 at home. UNLV won two of three doubles matches for the key first point, then split the six singles matches.

Jana Albers (No. 2), Adrien Hidvegi (No. 4) and Anna Maskaljun (No. 5) won at singles.

Also: UNLV's Brett Rather won the heavyweight title at the National Collegiate Boxing Championships in West Point, N.Y., defeating Army's Seth King by decision in the title bout.

UNLV's Jerome Foster lost by decision to Army's Danilo Garcia in the 125-pound title bout.

The UNLV softball team beat New Mexico 8-3 at Eller Media Stadium. Laura Briones went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a walk for the Rebels (25-14, 2-0 Mountain West Conference), and Tara Bendt went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Reliever Kylie Wagner threw 4 2/3 shutout innings.

The UNLV baseball team beat Utah 4-2 in Salt Lake City. Jarred Frierson was 2-for-4 with a run scored for the Rebels (19-13, 4-4 MWC), and Richie Jimenez was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

The College of Southern Nevada baseball team completed a four-game sweep of Southern Idaho, taking a doubleheader 16-5 and 9-6 at Morse Stadium.

The second-ranked Coyotes improved to 33-6 overall, 20-3 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.

The CSN softball team (22-15, 18-13 SWAC) split with Salt Lake Community College, bouncing back from a 10-0 rout to win 9-6 at Russell Road Recreation Complex.

Boston College drubs
Wisconsin in hockey final

Cam Atkinson scored twice and John Muse made 20 saves, and Boston College won the NCAA hockey championship for the second time in three years with a 5-0 victory over Wisconsin at Detroit's Ford Field.

The Eagles had four goals in the third period, with Atkinson and Chris Kreider scoring 2:02 apart early in the period.

A world indoor attendance record was set for hockey with a crowd of 37,592 at the home of the NFL's Detroit Lions.

Also: Third-seeded Sam Querrey defeated Wayne Odesnik 7-6 (4), 1-6, 7-5 in the semifinals of the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships in Houston.

Querrey will go for his second title this year in today's final against Argentina's Juan Ignacio Chela, who beat sixth-seeded countryman Horacio Zeballos, 7-5, 6-2.

Top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki advanced to the final of the MPS Group Championships in Ponte Vedra, Fla., beating fourth-seeded Elena Vesnina, 1-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4. Wozniacki, ranked No. 2 and the defending champion, will face unseeded Olga Govortsova, who beat third-seeded Dominika Cibulkvova, 6-4, 7-5.

Andre Berto stopped Carlos Quintana in the eighth round to retain his WBC welterweight title in Sunrise, Fla. Berto (26-0) did heavy damage from the third round through the eighth before stopping Quintana (27-3), a former WBO champion.

Hall of Fame boxing referee Arthur Mercante, the third man in the ring for the first Ali-Frazier fight and more than a hundred other world title bouts, died at age 90 in Westbury, N.Y. The cause of death wasn't disclosed.

Tom Herrion left his post as associate head basketball coach at Pittsburgh to take over the program at Marshall. He was given a five-year contract.

The Ottawa Senators will make their playoff run without veteran forward Alex Kovalev, who tore his anterior cruciate ligament last week. The 37-year-old has 18 goals and 31 assists in 77 games this season.
