King granted ruling to keep
Mayorga out of MMA match

Boxing promoter Don King said he has won a judge's temporary ruling in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., that is keeping former welterweight champion Ricardo Mayorga from fighting in a mixed martial arts match.

King claimed Mayorga breached their contract by trying to fight in the MMA match. Mayorga's fight with Din Thomas in Fayetteville, N.C., was canceled Saturday.

King said the judge asked him to post a bond of $1 million in cash, and he was able to come up with the money in a couple of hours. King said he helped bring Mayorga to the U.S. from his native Nicaragua and that he was working on a couple of championship fights for him.

Mayorga has said that even though he wanted to try MMA, he had not retired from boxing. His last fight was a 12th-round knockout loss against Shane Mosley in September 2008.

Also: Krzysztof Wlodarczyk took the vacant WBC cruiserweight title by stopping Giacobbe Fragomeni in the eighth round in Lodz, Poland.

Fragomeni quit after Wlodarczyk sent the 40-year-old to the canvas a second time in the eighth.

Michael Katsidis of Australia retained the interim WBO lightweight title by stopping Kevin Mitchell in the third round in London.

Drogba lifts Chelsea past
Portsmouth in FA Cup final

Didier Drogba scored his 37th goal of the season to give Chelsea a 1-0 victory over Portsmouth in the FA Cup final in Wembley, England.

After clinching the Premier League title last weekend, Chelsea hit the frame of the goal five times and Portsmouth missed a penalty before Drogba curled in a 59th-minute free kick.

Also: Fabio Capello committed to coach England until the 2012 European Championship by asking for his contract to be rewritten so his position isn't reviewed after the World Cup.

Capello, who took charge of England in 2008, was due to meet Football Association officials after the World Cup to determine whether he would stay in charge.

But Capello's lawyers are removing that clause after the Italian pledged his future to FA chairman David Triesman in recent weeks. It offers England confidence the 63-year-old won't walk away from the job after being linked to managerial positions throughout Europe.

Alex Ovechkin scored his fourth goal in four games to lead Russia (4-0) to a 3-2 victory over Germany at the ice hockey world championships in Cologne, Germany.

In the relegation group, New York Rangers rookie defenseman Matt Gilroy had a hat trick, and the United States finally got its first win of the tournament with a 10-0 rout of Kazakhstan.

Penny Taylor hit two free throws with 1.5 seconds left to lift the defending WNBA champion Phoenix Mercury to a 78-77 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks in the league's season opener in Phoenix.

Michael Phelps finished second behind Nicholas Thoman in the 100-meter backstroke at the Charlotte UltraSwim in Charlotte, N.C. Thoman, who has trained the past eight months in Charlotte, won in 53.70 seconds, with Phelps second in 53.92.

Two other Olympians were in the stacked race. Matt Grevers finished third in 54.50, and world-record holder and Olympic gold medalist Aaron Piersol took fifth in 56.26.
