Nadal routs Verdasco
in Monte Carlo final
Rafael Nadal won his first tournament in nearly a year Sunday, defeating Fernando Verdasco 6-0, 6-1 in an all-Spanish final at the Monte Carlo Masters in Monaco.
The second-seeded Nadal overpowered Verdasco with a stunning display of attacking clay-court tennis to earn his sixth straight victory at Monte Carlo but his first title since the Rome Masters in May 2009.
He said he was relieved to win again after losing consecutive Masters semifinals on hard courts at the BNP Paribas Open and the Sony Ericsson Open.
Also: Australia's Samantha Stosur earned her first title on clay, overwhelming Vera Zvonareva 6-0, 6-3 to win the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, S.C.
It was the second career title for the 26-year-old Stosur.

UNLV women's tennis
breezes by Air Force
The UNLV women's tennis team shut out Air Force 7-0 in a Mountain West Conference match on neutral courts in San Diego.
UNLV (20-3, 7-1 MWC) capped the regular season by sweeping the three doubles matches for the first point, then rolling up straight-set wins at all six singles slots. Kristina Nedeltcheva paced the Rebels with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Christen Monreal at No. 1.
Also: The UNLV baseball team lost to Tulane 10-2 in New Orleans.
The Rebels (22-15) trailed 6-0 before finally breaking through in the eighth inning with their only runs, on Hunter Beaty's two-run double. The Green Wave responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning.
FoxSports.com is reporting Southern California tight end Anthony McCoy tested positive for marijuana at the scouting combine. FoxSports.com cited unidentified sources and reported that Priority Sports and Entertainment, which represents McCoy, made every NFL team aware of the failed test result two weeks ago.
McCoy is considered a possible second- or third-round pick in this week's draft.
Georgia football coach Mark Richt announced that touted redshirt freshman quarterback Zach Mettenberger was kicked off the squad for violating team rules.

Sky Sox shut down 51s
to sweep doubleheader
The 51s dropped a Pacific Coast League doubleheader at Colorado Springs, losing the opener 3-1 and the second game 7-0, both in seven innings.
Second-inning doubles by Brian Dopirak and Jesus Marchan accounted for Las Vegas' run in the first game, and the Sky Sox countered with all their runs in the fourth on Cole Garner's three-run homer.
In the second game, Colorado Springs starter Jhoulys Chacin shut down Las Vegas (7-4), scattering four hits in 6 1/3 innings, with two walks and five strikeouts.
The Sky Sox (6-5) got all the runs they needed with a four-run second inning. Jay Payton had an RBI double, then scored after a throwing error on Michael McKenry's ground-out. Warren Schaeffer and Chris Frey followed with RBI doubles.
Also: A 3-year-old horse training for a final Kentucky Derby prep race has been euthanized after collapsing during a workout at Churchill Downs.
Tiz Chrome's trainer, Bob Baffert, said the colt suffered a fatal fracture of the left front sesamoid during a workout. Tiz Chrome was scheduled to run in the Derby Trial on Saturday.
Arsenal gave up three goals in the final 10 minutes to fall 3-2 against host Wigan and all but end its hopes of winning the English Premier League title.
Arsenal still had a slim chance of catching leader Chelsea.
