SUNRISE REGION
SOUTHEAST DIVISION

BASIC
Coach: Barb Gillaspy (acting)
Top players: Megan Scharf, Jr.
Outlook: The Wolves have only two returning players and plan to rebuild around Scharf, an individual state qualifier last season.

CORONADO
Coach: Joe Sawaia
Top players: Bethany Glassford, Sr.
Outlook: The Cougars, who have won the last two Sunrise titles and were 2006 state runners-up, return Sunrise Regional champion, state runner-up and All Southern Nevada selection Glassford as their top player. “We will be young,” Sawaia said. “But our newcomers show some promise.”

FOOTHILL
Coaches: Susan Labuda and Judy Swanson
Top players: MaryKate Cox, Jr.; Katie Dupont, Jr.; Caitlin Perry, Sr.; Katlyn Brady, Sr.
Outlook: The Falcons have 10 varsity players on the team, including several with at least one year of experience. They will be hoping to qualify some individuals for the regional and seeking improvement from all golfers with each match.

GREEN VALLEY
Coach: Greg Murphy
Top players: Jordan Sala, Jr.; Stephanie Kirk, Sr.
Outlook: The Gators, who finished fifth in the state last year, look to compete for the regional and state championships. Their strength will be depth, as they return all but one player from last year’s team. Kirk returns after placing 17th at state.

LIBERTY
Coach: Harold Vaughn
Top players: Marisa Amarillas, Sr.; Jenilyn Reyes, Sr.
Outlook: The Patriots are working to improve their technical and mental skill levels for the season.

SILVERADO
Coach: Tari Hawks
Top players: Stephanie Whatley, Sr.; Brittany Rizzetto, Jr.; Tameka Demps, So.; Katy Koehne, Jr.; Sidney Tidwell, So.
Outlook: The Skyhawks have a strong chance of winning their division, as they return three state qualifiers in Whatley, Rizzetto and Demps. Silverado hopes to advance to state as a team this season.

TECH
Coach: John Heffner
Top players: Elizabeth Weist, Sr.; Breanna Fawley, Fr.
Outlook: Tech (formerly Vo-Tech), is in its second year of golf competition, and the squad has just two players as the season begins.
NORTHEAST DIVISION
CANYON SPRINGS
Coach: Nicole Branham
Top players: Almira Willborn, So.; Jill Berman, Sr.; Shelby Smitley, Sr.; Amber Scott, Jr.
Outlook: The Pioneers won the Northeast crown in 2006 and hope to repeat. The Pioneers plan to battle Las Vegas and Valley for the division title and qualify at least one golfer, possibly Willborn, for the postseason.

CHAPARRAL
Coach: Howard Loosbroock
Top players: Ashley Smith, Jr.
Outlook: The Cowboys will build around Smith, hoping to see improvement and possibly qualifying as a team for the regional. First, however, they have to assemble a full five-player team.

DESERT PINES
Coaches: Jason Grattini and Caroline Pankonen
Top players: Brittany Alfaro, Sr.; Aide Ozaeta, Sr.; Brenda Mendoza, Sr.; Stormi Mayo, So.; Candy Borrayo, Sr.
Outlook: The Jaguars hope to field a full team, but all of their players will be inexperienced. They have had little time to practice at their home course because of reconstruction, but they have been practicing on the driving range.

ELDORADO
Coach: Jim Fitch
Top players: Breanna Fargo, Jr.; Kathy Mejia, Jr.
Outlook: The Sundevils will be returning Fargo and Mejia and trying to fill in the remaining spots. Fitch said that the best way to fill this void is to “give as many girls as much playing time as we possibly can. Then, we’ll see what talent we have and go from there.”

LAS VEGAS
Coach: Robert Denis
Top players: Tiffany Samia, So.; Katelyn Pitts, Jr.; Rebecca Pitts, Fr.; Ashley Mannio, Fr.; Claudia Segovia, Sr.; Rachel Horrocks, So.; Melissa Walton, So.
Outlook: The Wildcats return several of their starters from last season’s team and add a strong freshman in Mannio. They should challenge for the division title and qualify for the regional tournament.

RANCHO
Coach: Diane Stauffer
Top players: Kristi Bradford, Sr.; Hana Worth, So.; Sarah Wooten, So.; Merridee Drudy, So.
Outlook: The Rams have experienced substantial improvement over previous years, according to Stauffer, who also said that individual players have “shaved quite a few strokes off their handicap.” The Rams hope to qualify for regionals for the second year in a row.

VALLEY
Coach: John Wood
Top players: Brandi Wood, Sr.; Vivian Chan, Jr.; Annie Huynh, Jr.; Maureen Sell, So.
Outlook: The Vikings return three players. They are looking forward to a successful year and hope to qualify for the regional for a fifth straight year.

SUNSET REGION
SOUTHWEST DIVISION

BISHOP GORMAN
Coach: Kelsey McCall
Top players: In-Ah Park, Sr.; Nichole Corpus-Massucci, So.; Jennifer Hahn, Fr.; Nicholette Rivera, Fr.
Outlook: The four-time defending state champion Gaels have to be considered the favorite again, even though they graduated four golfers from last year’s team. The Gaels return state titlist Park and state place finisher Corpus-Massucci. “We don’t count anybody out,” McCall said about other teams. “I respect them all. We just try to accomplish our objectives and hope it’s good enough to win the competition.”

BONANZA
Coach: Cheryl Speer
Top players: Laura Nelson, Sr.; Hailey Leeming, Jr.
Outlook: The Bengals will be trying to improve upon last year’s results and qualify for the Sunset Regional. They have five returning players who are working on lowering their averages and four new players preparing for the season.

DURANGO
Coach: John Mausbach
Top players: Jessica Waldeck, Jr.; Jorgina Arballo, So.; Jennifer Kerbs, So.
Outlook: The only returning golfers for the Trailblazers are Waldeck and Arballo. They will be looking for improvement this season once they add two more golfers and can field a complete team.

SIERRA VISTA
Coach: Jack Whitefoot
Top players: Susan Park, Sr.; Nicole Xavier, So.
Outlook: After graduating three veteran players, the Lions hope to rebuild with young players and transfers. Park, who has qualified for state twice and finished 11th in the state in 2006, is expected to be a top contender again. The team’s goal is to improve individually throughout the season and remain competitive with the other public school teams.

SPRING VALLEY
Coach: Mike Gomez
Top players: Ashley Swarts, Sr.; Jackie Endsley, So.; Sarah Blank, Sr.
Outlook: The Grizzlies will be seeking improvement with each match. Swarts, the team’s most experienced player, has a strong chance of becoming a regional qualifier.

WESTERN
Coach: James Girard
Top players: Christine Hunt, Jr.; Katie Sorensen, Sr.; Ashley Boyd, Jr.
Outlook: The Warriors hope to see improvement from three second-year golfers who still are learning the game. The team hopes to be able to field a full team this season.
NORTHWEST DIVISION
ARBOR VIEW
Coach: David Fish
Top players: Susan Gillespie, Sr.; Kourtney Kinsel, Jr; Cassie Bolt, Fr.
Outlook: The Aggies, who finished fourth in the division in 2006, have three experienced golfers, including two-time regional qualifier Gillespie.

CENTENNIAL
Coach: Charlie Cerrone
Top players: Alex Borcherts, Sr.; Beth Burrus, Sr.; Alanna McLaughlin, Jr.; Sara Farr, Jr.; McCall Wheeler, So.
Outlook: The Bulldogs are again a regional and state title hopeful, but their goal right now is to compete for the division title. They have eight girls on the team, led by state placers Borcherts and Burrus. ”We want to see how low we can get their scores and see how competitive we can get,” Cerrone said.

CHEYENNE
Coach: Emma Major
Top players: Joi Steele, Sr.
Outlook: The Desert Shields hope to field a full team and be successful. They are comprised of mostly younger players who are working toward improvement. Look for Steele, the team leader, to possibly qualify for the regional as an individual.

CIMARRON-MEMORIAL
Coach: John Nelson
Top players: Sydney Mack, Sr.; Chelsea Williams, Sr.; Alyssa George, Sr.; Jenny Musser, Sr.; Jesse Musser, Sr.; Tiffany Scanga, Sr.; Catherine Winnick, Sr.
Outlook: The Spartans have a seven-player, senior-laden lineup, led by three-time state qualifier Mack and two-time qualifier Williams. They plan to at least qualify for the regional again.

LEGACY
Coach: Jeremy Thornton
Top players: Brittany Vincent, So.
Outlook: The Longhorns have one player and are hoping to add more during the first week of school.

MOJAVE
Coach: Chris Szafarski
Top players: Not available
Outlook: The Rattlers are struggling to get players to come out, but they do have four new players on the team.

PALO VERDE
Coach: Peggy Lair
Top players: Yuri An, Sr.; Da Hee Kim, Jr.; Sonja Pejak, Jr.; Britton Allen, Jr.; Lauren Arnold, Jr.; Leah Bayne, So.
Outlook: The Panthers hope to qualify as a team for the Sunset Regional. “We don’t have any real standout players, but the team has depth,” Lair said.

SHADOW RIDGE
Coach: Steve Barnson
Top players: Lindsey Wingert, So.
Outlook: Except for Wingert, the Mustangs have beginning golfers on their team, so they will have to “rebuild and get the girls excited about golf and then see what golfers we have,” Barnson said. The individual goal for Wingert is to qualify for the regional for her first time.
