Iowa Western’s walk-off home run ends season for CSN
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- Iowa Western's Brent Seifert hit a two-out, two-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to eliminate the College of Southern Nevada from the Junior College World Series on Thursday afternoon.
The Reivers won the elimination game 9-8 by scoring three unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth after Gabe Weidenaar put the Coyotes ahead with a three-run homer in the top of the inning.
With one out in the bottom of the ninth, left fielder Marvin Campbell dropped a fly ball to allow Anthony Bemboom to reach second base. Tanner Moore scored Bemboom with a two-out double that chased Joe Robinson from the game.
CSN closer Aaron Kurcz entered with the tying run on second base, but Seifert lined a 2-0 pitch over the wall in center field.
The Coyotes played the game without star catcher Bryce Harper, who was suspended for two games after being thrown out of Wednesday night's game, his second ejection of the season.
Coach Marc Morse was ejected from Thursday's game in the fifth inning after CSN's Trevor Kirk was called for interference trying to break up a double play at second base. Morse voiced his displeasure from the dugout and was immediately tossed by the home plate umpire.
Weidenaar's blast came after Tomo Delp led off the ninth inning with a single. Scott Dysinger tried to sacrifice pinch-runner Matt Medina to second, but his bunt was placed perfectly and Dysinger beat it out for a single.
Trailing 6-5, CSN coach Tim Chambers elected to allow Weidenaar to swing away instead of bunting the two runners into scoring position, and the decision paid off when he smacked a 1-1 pitch from Scott Donner over the right-field wall.
Daniel Higa hit a two-out, two-run homer in the eighth to get CSN back within one run.
Robinson, who was rocked by Iowa Western on Tuesday night, pitched 4 1/3 innings of relief and was in position to get the victory.
He allowed two inherited runners to score upon entering the game in the fifth inning, but allowed just the two unearned runs in the ninth before giving way to Kurcz.
Campbell hit a two-out, solo home run in the top of the third inning to extend the Coyotes' early lead to 3-1, but Tanner Moore and Hutchison hit RBI doubles for the Reivers to tie the game and chase CSN starter Bryan Harper.
Rawlings then hit Tyler Iodence's first pitch to center field for a go-ahead sacrifice fly.
Ivan Hartle drove in the Reivers' first run with sacrifice fly in the second inning.
Trent Cook and Campbell had RBI singles in the first inning to get the Coyotes an early lead, but CSN missed an opportunity to extend the advantage when it left the bases loaded.
Bryan Harper, starting on two days' rest, allowed four runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings for CSN.
