Iverson, Nuggets get by Mavericks
December 7, 2007 - 10:00 pm
DALLAS -- Allen Iverson went hard to the basket. He didn't get there, but he did draw a foul.
The next time down the court, A.I. made another veteran move, drawing another foul on the same defender.
The game was only 11/2 minutes old, yet Iverson already was in full control.
A day after scoring 51 points in a loss, Iverson might have been even better, scoring 35 points and dishing out 12 assists while leading the Denver Nuggets past the Dallas Mavericks 122-109 Thursday.
"A.I. had it all going from everywhere," said Dallas' Dirk Nowitzki, who had 32 points and 12 rebounds. "He was driving and making shots in between."
Linas Kleiza benefited from Iverson's passing, scoring a season-best 23 points, Carmelo Anthony added 23 points, and Kenyon Martin had 18 points and seven rebounds. Denver made 50.5 percent of its shots despite Anthony going 9-for-30.
For all his statistical prowess, Iverson's most impressive number might've been his playing time of 42:54. He played 48 minutes the previous night in a loss to the Lakers.
"He's the Energizer bunny," fellow starting guard Anthony Carter said. "He was charged up for this game."
Maybe it was the microphones. Anyone watching on TNT got more insight than any previous NBA broadcast as this was the first with players and coaches wearing microphones.
Among the insights: Nuggets coach George Karl saying, "When we pass the ball, we usually play well," and Mavericks coach Avery Johnson telling his team during an early timeout, "Good hustle, men, keep it up."
They didn't.
The Mavericks allowed their most points this season in a quarter (39, the first), a half (64) and a game. They also committed 19 turnovers.
Jerry Stackhouse scored 23 points and Josh Howard 20 for Dallas.
• Hawks 90, Timberwolves 89 -- At Atlanta, Joe Johnson's 18-footer at the buzzer helped Atlanta avoid an embarrassing defeat.
Minnesota (2-15), which lost its fifth straight, had a one-point lead after Marko Jaric's layup with 2.2 seconds left.
However, after an Atlanta timeout, Johnson took the inbounds pass at the top of the key, dribbled to his right and pulled up for the winner.
Josh Smith had 28 points and seven blocked shots for Atlanta. Johnson added 21 points and Marvin Williams 20.
Craig Smith had 20 points and Corey Brewer 18 rebounds for the Timberwolves. Despite having their reserves outscore Atlanta's by 46 points, Minnesota lost for the 22nd time in 24 games since April 6.
• Trail Blazers 112, Heat 106 -- At Portland, Ore., Brandon Roy had 25 points and Travis Outlaw 20 as Portland sent Miami to its fourth straight loss.
Dwyane Wade had 21 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists for the Heat, but he shot 9-for-26 from the field. Daequan Cook had 20 points and Ricky Davis 18 for Miami.
Shaquille O'Neal had eight points and 10 rebounds in 22 foul-plagued minutes for the Heat (3-15).
