Kentucky squad overwhelms host
Marvin Campbell is a three-sport athlete, so he knows a thing or two about production.
But what the Las Vegas senior accomplished Friday afternoon might have exceeded even his own expectations.
Campbell turned in his best performance of the basketball season, scoring 26 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, but the Wildcats dropped a 72-54 decision to Pleasure Ridge Park (Ky.) in the quarterfinal round of the Las Vegas Prep Championship at Las Vegas High School.
His performance was the Wildcats' biggest bright spot against a more talented Pleasure Ridge Park squad. The Panthers later Friday defeated Hoover (Calif.) 73-60 to advance to the championship game at 6 p.m. today against Valley.
"If it wasn't for Marvin's performance today, it really would have been ugly," Las Vegas coach Paul Merkel said. "The offense wasn't designed for Marvin, it just happened that way.
"He got some good looks and took advantage. He was the bright spot for us."
Campbell, who played quarterback in football and first base in baseball, made 14 of 16 attempts from the foul line.
When asked about the physical, up-and-down tempo forced by Pleasure Ridge Park, Campbell smiled and said, "I've been hit a couple of times like that in football, but that's part of the game."
The Wildcats fought an uphill battle all afternoon, even though Pleasure Ridge Park was without Brandon Shoenoff, who has averaged in double figures in points and rebounds. Shoenoff reinjured an ankle early in the first half and didn't return.
Allen Murray led Pleasure Ridge Park scorers with 20 points, and Adam Delph added 17, Adam Decker 13 and Shawn Brauner 11.
Campbell was the lone Wildcats scorer to reach double figures.
