Know your boss, or get tossed

Do you know what your boss looks like?

If you work at New York’s Madison Square Garden, you had better know. Or it might cost you your job.

Fiordaliza Hernandez found that out the hard way when she failed to recognize James Dolan, who owns the Garden, at Sunday’s Knicks game. According to the New York Post, Dolan was trying to gain entry to the arena’s exclusive club, and Hernandez, a Garden security officer who was stationed at the door, asked Dolan for his identification.

Dolan bellowed at Hernandez, “Do you know who I am?” She didn’t and refused him access to his own club.

Dolan fired her later that day but reconsidered Monday and brought her back. You can bet she knows who he is now because she, and all other MSG staff, are now required to carry a photo of Dolan in their pocket as part of their uniform.

Here at Leftovers, we have no such issues. We know our boss, Bob Brown. He’s the tall, handsome, kind gentleman who signs our checks and who doesn’t need to flash an ID to gain access to the R-J cafeteria, aka our “exclusive club.”

■ GRINER TO (W)NBA? — In 2009, a shy Brittney Griner dominated as a freshman for Baylor at the Las Vegas Hoops Classic, a pre-Christmas tournament at South Point Arena. Could the All-American be coming back to Las Vegas this summer?

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is toying with the idea of drafting the 6-foot-8-inch Griner in the second round of the NBA Draft and putting her on the Mavs’ NBA Summer League team in July at Cox Pavilion.

Speaking to reporters Tuesday before the Mavericks faced the Los Angeles Lakers, Cuban said he wasn’t joking.

“Right now, I’d lean toward yes, just to see if she can do it,” he said. “You never know unless you give someone a chance. If she’s the best player available, I’d take her.”

Griner is expected to be the No. 1 player taken in the WNBA Draft on April 15. The Phoenix Mercury have the first pick. But she’s not against Cuban’s idea. In a tweet Tuesday, she said: “I would hold my own! Let’s do it!”

■ PIZZA WARS — Wichita State faces Louisville on Saturday in the Final Four. If the Shockers beat the Cardinals and go on to win the national championship Monday in Atlanta, its students will get free pizza courtesy of Pizza Hut, which was founded in Wichita in 1958.

Pizza Hut also announced that should the Shockers win the title, all large, one-topping pizzas will be $9 for people who sign up for the company’s email program. The $9 figure comes from Wichita State’s seed in the NCAA Tournament. But you can get a better deal through Saturday for less. Pizza Hut is running a $7.99 promotion for a large pizza with two toppings. So the Shockers promotion actually would cost more and you get less.

Not to be outdone, Papa John’s Pizza, based in Louisville, Ky., has been offering free large pizzas with three toppings throughout the tournament for fans who purchase $11 or more of Papa John’s products online.

To that, we say, “Better deal. Better team. Papa John’s.”
