KOREA TAKES GOLD

Korea dominated late to defeat the United States 1,175-1,071 and win the gold medal of the Women's World Championships on Saturday night at Cashman Center.

It was the first team title for the Koreans since 1999.

Members of the Korean team were Jeon Eun-Hee (258), Kim Yeau-Jin (258), Son Yun-Hee (257), Hwang Sun-Ok (212) and Gang Hey-Eun (190).

The silver-medal U.S. team of Liz Johnson (259), Carolyn Dorin-Ballard (232), Stefanie Nation (225), Kim Terrell-Kearney (189) and Lynda Barnes (166) reached the finals by beating Singapore 1,035-934 in the semifinals.

Korea rallied to beat Sweden 1,041-974 in the other semifinal match.

Singapore and Sweden won bronze medals.

The weeklong event ends today with the 16 top bowlers in all-events -- including Dorin-Ballard, Johnson and Nation -- competing for the Masters title.

In the first three games of preliminary play, Korea set a World Tenpin Bowling Association record with a team pinfall of 3,433 (228.86 average). The United States also topped the previous mark with a 3,361 that included a record 1,192 game.
