LEFTOVERS: Shirtless Spurrier resurfaces

Three sure signs that the college football season is not far away: a Heisman Trophy winner is under investigation, Bret Bielema has his windbreaker in a twist about Ohio State, and we’ve had a Shirtless Spurrier sighting.

In one of the sport’s most unfortunate traditions, new photos of South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier wearing only a pair of white shorts, a pretty righteous golf-sock tan and his trademark visor started circulating the Internet on Thursday.

Running back Kendric Salley tweeted a photograph of the 68-year-old Head Ball Coach on the South Carolina practice field looking like he was just booted out of All-American Burger — “No shirt, no shoes, no dice!” — and it didn’t take long for the photo to go viral.

It’s unclear when the photo was taken, but, according to Deadspin.com, it is the first known sighting of Shirtless Spurrier since 2012.

A recent Instagram video made by sophomore wide receiver Shaq Roland included a cameo by Shirtless (and Shoeless) Spurrier. Busy week.

Of course, several sports websites weighed in on the fact that Phillip Fulmer’s Personal Tormentor couldn’t even be bothered to put on a pair of $5 flip flops from Old Navy.

Deadspin.com: “It’s only Aug. 9, but it’s gonna be hard to top ‘that is clearly the 2013 version of Steve Spurrier’s body’ as the most SEC phrase of 2013.”

Kegs ’N Eggs blog: “Looking through the deep database of Steve Spurrier shirtless images on Google — try this sometime, it’s a magnificent Internet rabbit hole — this one appears to be new to the party. We welcome it with open arms and a frosty mug of whatever (HBC) is drinking.”

Spurrier has been known to get frisky during the preseason, and it’s usually when he feels pretty good about his team.

With Jadeveon Clowney rushing the quarterback for the Gamecocks, this might not be the last time we see Shirtless Spurrier.

■ THANKS, DAD! — Doug Gilmour was known as “Killer” during his NHL playing days, so it’s no surprise he would trade his son.

Gilmour, now general manager of the Kingston Frontenacs of the Ontario Hockey League, this week dealt his 16-year-old son Jake along with one other player and a conditional 12th-round pick in 2015 to the Niagara IceDogs for a 12th-round pick in 2015.

The lopsided move gives the younger Gilmour a better chance to make a team in the Canadian major junior league.

“It looks like it’s going to be a bad deal for the Frontenacs,” Doug Gilmour said, “and I have no problem with that.”

■ SALES PITCH — Christopher Craig, a former assistant basketball coach at Northern Colorado, was arrested Thursday in Price, Utah, his second arrest in recent weeks.

According to the Sun Advocate newspaper, Craig, 32, was arrested July 10 at a Wal-Mart in Thatcher, Ariz., after allegedly making threatening statements to people on the campus of Eastern Arizona College.

Authorities in Colorado also said last week that Craig, the former head coach at Utah State University Eastern, had been wandering about and warning Catholics and Mormons that they “would be destroyed” in the near future.

Now we know why Craig is not at a bigger school. He’s a terrible recruiter.
