Classy Torre deserves to return with Yankees

To the sports editor:

I am in no way a New York Yankees fan; in fact, I have rooted against them for years But one fact remains: The Yankees have represented class.

When they win, they do so gracefully; when they lose, they give credit to the team that beat them.

That sort of thing starts at the top, and I don't mean with owner George Steinbrenner. Rather, manager Joe Torre has represented everything over the past 35 years that those of us who love baseball embrace.

Torre manages with a great respect for the game. His players don't preen or posture; they act as though they've won before.

Sadly, it appears that now that the Yankees have lost to the Indians, "King George" will make good on his promise to fire Torre. I only hope that a few of Torre's players will have the guts to opt for free agency, ask for trades or retire as a gesture of solidarity.

Sanford inept as coach; Rebels in need of change

To the sports editor:

Twenty-eight years living here in Southern Nevada and I've seen the good (Tony Knap), the bad (Wayne Nunnely and Jeff Horton) and the indifferent (John Robinson) coach the joke that is UNLV football.

But never have I seen a more inept head coach as we have now in Mike Sanford, who gets out-coached at every turn and has lost any semblance of player discipline during games with personal-foul penalties.

Let's all admit it's just another very bad hire. Pay him off -- UNLV is good at that -- and try, try again.

SONNY SHEPARD

To the sports editor:

Mike Sanford is not a good head coach.

UNLV needs to hire either former Minnesota coach Glen Mason or former Michigan State coach John L. Smith.

KEITH SWANN

To the sports editor:

The current group of coaches has done a good job of recruiting talent, and that allowed the Rebels to fool two teams early in the season. But once the remaining opposition sees them play once or twice on film, it's over.

This coaching staff and, unfortunately, most of the past wannabes and has-beens end with the same results: losing seasons.

UNLV's athletic department leaders have no clue how to recruit a football coach for this great university. They should hire professionals to do the job.

Shriners, as Graney says, have wonderful program

To the sports editor:

I really didn't want to start the day Thursday with tears pouring down my face, but I did.

What a poignant piece of work by Ed Graney on the Shriners Hospitals for Children ("Children heal beyond the greens").

STEPHANIE WILSON

To the sports editor:

Thank you for Ed Graney's column on the Shriners Childrens Hospitals program.

In 1952, at age 6, I spent many months in Shriners San Francisco, plus another period in a full-body cast to correct my scoliosis.

The public is not aware of the wonderful treatments Shriners provides. But my life has been full as I approach my 62nd year.
