LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

U.S. athletes should be ashamed for not singing
To the sports editor:
Am I the only one who was appalled at the high percentage of "our" Olympic athletes who didn't sing or even mouth the words to the national anthem as they stood on the podium with their gold medals?
It seemed to me they were smug about their physical prowess being more important to them than patriotism.
At home, I stood for the anthem and softly sang the words.

L.A. writer doesn't need China trip to see phonies
To the sports editor:
Thanks for including the sarcastic, wise-ass article by Bill Plaschke of the Los Angeles Times titled "Mixed feelings abound" (Aug. 24), in which he roundly criticized the Chinese Olympic organizers and government for taking extreme measures (in his opinion) to give the best possible appearance during the conduct of the Olympic Games.
It's a good thing for him that he headed back to Los Angeles, where there are no illusions or phonies.

For players' sake, give UNLV's Sanford a break
To the sports editor:
I hear all of this talk about how UNLV football coach Mike Sanford might be in trouble this season if the Rebels don't win. That might be true, but I believe for the sake of the players who will do the best they can to compete and hopefully win that all of this negative speculation should stop.
Sometimes I think people love to see the Rebels fail, just like so many people want to see our president fail.
Like my father told me as a child, if you can't be part of the solution, then don't be part of the problem.
LEONARD ANDERSON
Kudos to Anderson for UNLV football overview
To the sports editor:
I believe you have a rising star in reporter Mark Anderson.
His recent overview of UNLV football in the Review-Journal's special football section was magnificent.
