Lyons powers Air Force past No. 22 Aztecs
AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - Michael Lyons scored 20 points, and Air Force beat No. 22 San Diego State 70-67 on Saturday, overcoming a 25-point performance by Aztecs star Jamaal Franklin.
Franklin and James Rahon missed potential game-tying 3-pointers in the waning seconds.
The Falcons (14-6, 5-2 Mountain West) won their fifth straight at Clune Arena, while the Aztecs (16-5, 4-3) lost for the second time in their past 10 games against Air Force.
The Falcons used a 19-2 run to take control at 59-47 and then held on as Franklin scored 18 of his 25 points in the second half. He also had 10 rebounds and was 11-for-12 from the foul line, his only miss a big one with less than a minute left and the Aztecs trailing by two.
Franklin sank the second free throw to make the score 68-67 before Kamryn Williams hit two free throws at the other end for a 70-67 lead with 19.1 seconds left.
The Aztecs had beaten their previous two opponents by 21 points each, including a 55-34 blowout of then-No. 15 New Mexico, their biggest margin of victory over a ranked team in school history.
■ No. 20 New Mexico 75, UNR 62 - At Albuquerque, N.M., Chad Adams hit two 3-pointers during a key second-half run to spur the Lobos past the Wolf Pack.
With New Mexico (19-3, 6-1) trailing 51-50, Adams started a 10-2 surge and capped it as the Lobos went ahead to stay at 60-53.
Hugh Greenwood led New Mexico with 15 points.
Malik Story scored 20 for UNR (11-10, 2-5). Deonte Burton, who came in leading the conference in scoring at 18.5 points, finished with 13 points, 11 in the second half, for the Wolf Pack.
■ Colorado State 65, Wyoming 46 - At Fort Collins, Colo., Dorian Green had 15 points to lead five Rams scorers in double figures.
Daniel Bejarano and Wes Eikmeier added 13 points each, and Colton Iverson and Pierce Hornung scored 12 apiece for Colorado State (18-4, 5-2), which extended its home-court winning streak to 26 games, third-longest in the nation.
Derrious Gilmore had 26 points, including six 3-pointers, for the Cowboys (15-6, 2-6).
