Mojave’s Hopkins chooses Duke

Mojave High School girls basketball standout Chelsea Hopkins orally committed to play at Duke on Wednesday.

Hopkins, a 5-foot-7-inch point guard, was a first team all-state pick as a junior after averaging 27.3 points, 7.9 rebounds and 7.8 assists. She is ranked No. 61 in the senior class by hoopgurlz.com.

Hopkins chose Duke over UCLA, California, Southern California, Texas and Temple.

The Blue Devils finished 32-2 last season.

Her father said the decision came down to academics.

"We came to terms with the fact that the ball was going to stop bouncing for her," Tony Hopkins said. "But the academic part of it is what basically swayed us toward Duke."
