Morgan close to making decision

College basketball coaches have eyed Moses Morgan for years. This weekend, Morgan will be the one doing the evaluating.

The Palo Verde senior swingman plans to leave Friday for an official visit to Indiana, where his father, Winston, played in the 1980s.

Morgan also has scheduled official visits to DePaul (Sept. 19-20) and Arizona State (Oct. 17-18).

He hopes to squeeze in a trip to Minnesota between those two visits.

"I'm real excited, real anxious," Morgan said. "I can't wait to get out to Indiana because I have family there, so that should be fun."

Morgan, who also has scholarship offers from UNLV, Oklahoma, Texas Tech and UNR, said he plans to return from Indiana and "think it through" before making a possible oral commitment.

Morgan said the biggest keys he will look for at Indiana are campus environment and interaction with coaches and players. Whichever school Morgan chooses, he plans to sign during the early period from Nov. 11-18.

"I want to sign early because I want to focus on my schoolwork and the season, have (recruiting) out of the way," he said.

The 6-foot-5-inch Morgan averaged 17.0 points and 7.5 rebounds as a junior, leading Palo Verde to a 24-6 record and the Class 4A state title game. Rivals.com and Scout.com rate him as a three-star prospect.

• COLLINS COMMITS -- Silverado girls basketball guard Shea Collins committed to Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, choosing the Jaguars over an offer from Eastern Washington.

"I basically fell in love with the school," said Collins, a senior. "I enjoyed the coaching staff. I felt like I fit in right away."

• OTHER DECISIONS -- The UNLV baseball program recently received commitments from Arbor View senior outfielder/pitcher Buddy Borden and senior infielder/pitcher Zach Hartman.

Rancho junior pitcher Eric Holdren committed to San Diego State.

Girls soccer seniors making commitments included Arbor View's Alex Luevano (Akron) and Bianca Norman (Gonzaga); Faith Lutheran's Maddie Courvoisier (Texas Christian); Green Valley's Megan Brickley (Trinity Christian College, Ill.) and Kaylynn Burgess (North Dakota); and Rancho's Jahmela Muhammad (UNLV).

In boys soccer, Palo Verde senior Aaron Garfinkel committed to Loyola Marymount.
