Muhammad named Wootten winner
Bishop Gorman High basketball player Shabazz Muhammad has been named the 2012 Morgan Wootten Male Player of the Year.
The Morgan Wootten Award is given annually to the best male and female McDonald's All-American players who exemplify outstanding character, exhibit leadership and embody the values of being a student-athlete in the classroom and community.
Muhammad, a 6-foot-6-inch guard/forward, averaged 29.4 points, 10.1 rebounds and 2.4 assists to lead Bishop Gorman (28-4) to its third Class 4A state title in four years.
Muhammad is scheduled to play in the McDonald's All-American Game on March 28 in Chicago. He will be joined by Findlay Prep standouts Brandon Ashley and Anthony Bennett.
■ COMMITMENT -- Desert Pines junior point guard Julian Jacobs made an oral commitment to play college basketball at Utah, his summer coach, Las Vegas Prospects coach Anthony Brown said.
The 6-3 Jacobs was a third-team all-state pick, averaging 12.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 5.9 assists to lead the Jaguars (14-7) to the Sunrise Region quarterfinals.
Jacobs was an All-Sunrise Region pick and a first-team All-Northeast League selection as a junior.
