NASCAR teen’s dad runs wild
October 14, 2009 - 9:00 pm
Teenager Joey Logano is old enough to race in NASCAR but apparently isn't able to fight his own battles.
Logano's father, Tom, confronted driver Greg Biffle on pit road after Saturday's Nationwide series race at Fontana, Calif., because Biffle allegedly told his crew over a two-way radio that he planned to hit Logano's car.
Biffle, 39, forced Logano into the outer guardwall, causing minor damage to the 19-year-old's car. But Logano rallied to win the race.
"I think this is the best way to get him back," Logano said of Biffle, who finished 14th.
Tom Logano's actions prompted NASCAR officials to pull his annual infield credential.
NASCAR is no place for Little League parents.
• BUCK STOPS HERE -- A 7-year-old Ohio boy playing a game of backyard football was tackled by a deer.
Brandon Hiles said he encountered the buck when the ball rolled into the woods while he was playing with friends Saturday in Wintersville, about 125 miles east of Columbus. The boy said the buck ran at him and flipped him with its antlers, leaving bruises and a gash.
His 9-year-old friend Wyatt Pugh beat the deer with a stick to make it go away.
A Wintersville police officer said two bucks were in the area preparing to fight and that Brandon was attacked when he inadvertently got between them.
• CARVING SAFE IN CANADA -- A missing half-ton chain-saw carving of former Buffalo Bills running back Thurman Thomas is apparently in Canada.
Orchard Park, N.Y., police said an Ontario man called the organization that owns the carving Tuesday. He said he and some friends rescued it after seeing people trying to burn it.
The 81/2-foot statue disappeared from a parking lot across from Ralph Wilson Stadium after Sunday's Bills game against the Browns.
The statue was unveiled before Sunday's game.
• CAN'T LET GO -- Perhaps taking inspiration from ageless NFL wonder Brett Favre, former NHL star Chris Chelios skated Monday with the minor league Chicago Wolves and said he probably will sign a contract with the team this week.
Chelios, 47, said he wants to help his chances of "getting back in the NHL someday."
Isn't 25 seasons enough?
Chelios was the NHL's oldest active player in 2008-09 when he helped the Detroit Red Wings make a run to the Stanley Cup Finals.
• AND YOU THOUGHT YOU WERE HURTING -- Dwight Perry of The Seattle Times writes:
Spare your slow-pitch teammates your playing-with-pain stories this week unless you can top:
Ottawa Senators winger Milan Michalek had two front teeth broken in half by a high stick in a game last week, leaving the nerves exposed and sending him off the ice -- for maybe two minutes.
"I wanted to (take the penalty shot)," Michalek told the Ottawa Sun, "but the ref told me I was bleeding too much. The dentist wasn't coming (to the dressing room), so I just went back and played."
Hand it to him, the guy's a gamer -- or is that gummer?
