Nevada fishing report

LAKE MEAD — Colder temperatures in the early mornings have discouraged some anglers, but those who have braved the conditions report better fishing along with less competition. Vegas Wash has been a popular spot for more and bigger fish than in the recent past. Stripers are taking lures, Sassy Shad and jigs. The fish are hitting everywhere from deep water to shallows at depths of 2 to 4 feet. Black bass fishing has been a cause of frustration for many anglers. Even when the fish are found, they are not easily fooled.
LAKE MOHAVE — Those heading south out of Cottonwood Cove have reported “hitting the jackpot” with big stripers. The striped bass have been hitting on various lures, such as Bombers and Strike King crank baits. Rusty’s Riviera Marina said an angler caught an 18.26-pound fish while casting his favorite lure from the shoreline. Early morning has been the prime time to hit the water. Action continues to improve at Willow Beach for striped bass. Anchovies and night crawlers have worked well. While there have not been many reports of lunkers being caught, anglers are happy with their catches. Catfish anglers have caught some nice fish near Katherine Landing. Two anglers caught a 6-pound cat that measured 29 inches and two more that were 23 and 24.25 inches.
LAUGHLIN — Those taking advantage of improved weather conditions have found success for various species. Striped bass are showing all along the river. Anchovies have worked well for fish in the 1- to 3-pound range, and lures can only increase the action as well as the opportunity of catching larger fish. Catfish also have been active, with most taking anchovies. Sunshine Peninsula or near Davis Dam have been lucky spots. While most of the trout have dispersed and are in hiding holes, anglers are still bringing in fish with night crawlers or spinning lures, such as Rooster Tails or Panther Martins.
LAS VEGAS URBAN PONDS — Catch rates have improved after recent trout plants. During a weekend event at Sunset Park, fishermen did well with peach-colored PowerBait. Many caught their limits, while others found success with Super-dupers in gold with red spots and with silver spinners.
KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA — No fishing activity was reported at Kirch in the past week. Ice has formed on all the boat launches. Fishing from the dams at Cold Springs, Haymeadow and Dacey is possible. All reservoirs but Adams-McGill have open water that can be fished, but access to that open water will be problematic. It might be possible to launch small water craft, pontoons and float tubes from the dikes of Haymeadow, Coldsprings and Dacey.
EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR — Activity at the park was slow this past week. Anglers have caught rainbow trout while using PowerBait from the dock. Daytime temperatures have been in the 50s but below freezing overnight.
ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR — Thin ice has been a problem around the shoreline edges, making it difficult to fish.
FLY FISHING CLASS — The Nevada Department of Wildlife will host a free fly-fishing introductory class from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 13 at Floyd Lamb Park. For more information and to register, visit www.ndow.org/Education/Angler_Ed/Classes.
