NFL: No training camp for ‘Pacman’
July 27, 2007 - 9:00 pm
The NFL denied suspended cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones' request Thursday to join the Tennessee Titans in training camp.
In an e-mail, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello wrote that Jones wanted to revise the terms of his suspension.
"It's what we have expected ... that he will not be permitted to participate in training camp, and he will only be permitted to use the facility one day a week for treatment and counseling," Titans coach Jeff Fisher said.
Jones had been preparing for camp as his agent, Michael Huyghue, contended commissioner Roger Goodell never ruled out training camp or preseason games when suspending Jones for the 2007 season for conduct detrimental to the league. But Goodell originally told Jones when suspending him that the cornerback could not practice with the team during the suspension.
Since the suspension was handed down in April, Jones was arrested for the sixth time since being drafted on two counts of felony coercion stemming from a fight at a Las Vegas strip club during NBA All-Star Weekend. A shooting after the fight left a man paralyzed, but no one has been charged in that assault.
• BENGALS -- Odell Thurman's petition for reinstatement was denied by Goodell, who decided the Cincinnati middle linebacker should miss another season because of his ongoing problems.
Thurman was suspended for last season after skipping a drug test and being arrested for drunken driving. He will be allowed to ask for reinstatement again after the season.
Also, Cincinnati signed fifth-round draft pick Jeff Rowe, a quarterback from UNR.
• RAMS -- Quarterback Marc Bulger, who is seeking a new contract, was a no-show for St. Louis' mandatory team meeting.
Bulger is in the final season of a four-year, $19.1 million contract. The team has said signing him to a new deal is a priority.
• BILLS -- Quarterback J.P. Losman was held out for the start of Buffalo's training camp after straining his lower back working out this week. Coach Dick Jauron listed Losman as day to day.
Also, receiver Peerless Price dislocated his left pinky finger. It is not known whether he will miss practice time.
• BROWNS -- Former UNLV cornerback Eric Wright, a second-round pick, signed a four-year contract. Terms weren't available.
Cleveland also signed offensive tackle Joe Thomas, the third overall selection, to a six-year contract, leaving quarterback Brady Quinn as the team's only unsigned pick. Reports said Thomas will get about $23 million in guaranteed money -- the most ever given to a tackle.
• BUCCANEERS -- Defensive end Gaines Adams, taken No. 4, became the highest pick in this year's draft to sign a contract when he agreed to a six-year, $46 million deal.
Also, the team cut 12-year veteran defensive end Simeon Rice after he failed a physical.
• FALCONS -- Defensive end Jamaal Anderson, the No. 8 pick in the draft, signed a five-year contract that could be worth $31 million.
• BILLS -- Running back Marshawn Lynch, Buffalo's first-round draft pick, agreed to a five-year contract worth nearly $19 million.
• COLTS -- Wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez, Indianapolis' first-round draft pick, agreed to a five-year contract worth $10.3 million.
• COWBOYS -- Linebacker Anthony Spencer, Dallas' first-round draft pick, signed a $9 million, five-year contract.
• STEELERS -- Linebacker Lawrence Timmons, Pittsburgh's first-round draft pick, injured his groin in practice and will be out indefinitely.
• SAINTS -- Special teams standout Steve Gleason was placed on injured reserve and will miss the season. He underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in June.
• REDSKINS -- Free-agent receiver Corey Bradford signed with Washington.
• JETS -- Running back Cedric Houston left the team for personal reasons.
• EAGLES -- Garrett Reid, a son of coach Andy Reid, pleaded guilty to drug and traffic offenses and will serve at least three days in jail. Another son, Britt, opted to go to trial on drug and weapons charges.
