No. 16 Lobos fall behind early, suffer first loss

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - A 1,220-mile bus trip, a gimpy ankle and a nationally ranked opponent were no hindrance to South Dakota State guard Nate Wolters on Saturday.

Wolters scored 28 points and added seven assists, leading South Dakota State to a 70-65 upset of No. 16 New Mexico.

"I definitely wasn't 100 percent," Wolters said. "But once I got going I just tried to feed off my teammates. It felt pretty good out there."

After a loss to Belmont on Wednesday, the Jackrabbits (10-4) had to take a bus from Nashville, Tenn., because of a snowstorm.

Kendall Williams scored 21 to lead the Lobos (12-1), who went 7-for-12 from the foul line in the closing minutes to frustrate their own comeback efforts.

The Jackrabbits led the final 37 minutes of the game after taking the lead with an early 8-0 run.

■ No. 18 San Diego State 80, San Francisco 58 - At Honolulu, Chase Tapley scored a career-high 33 points as the Aztecs (10-1) won their 10th straight, beating the Dons (5-5) in the first round of the Diamond Head Classic.

Cole Dickerson, who led San Francisco with 15 points and 12 rebounds, hit a 3-pointer to pull the Dons within 45-43 with 13 minutes left. Coming off a timeout, Tapley scored on a layup and then started pouring in baskets from everywhere. The senior was 13-for-19 from the field, and his final 3-pointer gave the Aztecs a 68-52 lead.

■ UCLA 91, Fresno State 78 - At Los Angeles, former Bishop Gorman High star Shabazz Muhammad scored 20 of his season-high 27 points in the second half, and the Bruins (9-3) beat the Bulldogs for their fourth straight win.

Jordan Adams added 25 points, and fellow freshman Kyle Anderson had season bests with 20 points and 17 rebounds for UCLA. Larry Drew II had 10 assists.

Freshman Marvelle Harris had a season-high 19 points for Fresno State (5-7).

■ Air Force 61, UC Riverside 53 - At Riverside, Calif., Michael Lyons scored 22 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out three assists, and the Falcons (8-2) shot 52 percent from the field in the second half to beat the Highlanders (3-9).
