North Carolina thrashes UNR
RENO -- Tyler Hansbrough missed the only shot he took in the first eight minutes against UNR, but he took over after that to help keep top-ranked North Carolina undefeated.
Hansbrough finished with 22 points Wednesday as the Tar Heels dispatched of the Wolf Pack 84-61 -- their school-record 13th straight win by double figures.
"I was just waiting for the game to come to me," said Hansbrough, who made 7 of 13 field goals and 8 of 10 free throws. "I wasn't trying to force anything."
Wayne Ellington added 15 points and Ty Lawson had 11 points and seven assists for North Carolina (13-0), which trailed early but put together a 10-1 run midway through the first half capped by a Hansbrough 3-pointer to take control.
Freshman Luke Babbitt had 22 points, Armon Johnson 15 and Malik Cooke 13 for UNR (7-6), which trailed 41-27 at the half.
It marked the seventh straight 20-point game for Hansbrough, North Carolina's career scoring leader. He also had three rebounds to move past Brad Daugherty into a tie with Mitch Kupchak for fifth on the school's career rebounding list with 1,006.
• No. 3 Pittsburgh 78, Rutgers 72 -- At Piscataway, N.J., Sam Young had 18 points, and Brad Wanamaker scored 13 of his career-high 15 in the second half as the Panthers (13-0) wore down the Scarlet Knights (9-5) in the Big East opener for both teams.
Rutgers led 55-50 midway through the second half. Wanamaker then scored five points in a 9-0 run as Pitt pulled away.
• No. 5 Duke 92, Loyola (Md.) 51 -- At Durham, N.C., Kyle Singler scored 20 points as the Blue Devils (11-1) routed the Greyhounds (4-9) despite losing starting point guard Nolan Smith to a left knee injury midway through the first half.
• No. 7 Notre Dame 92, DePaul 82 -- At Rosemont, Ill., Luke Harangody had 26 points and 16 rebounds as the Fighting Irish (10-2) beat the Blue Demons (8-6) in the Big East opener for both teams.
Notre Dame took control for good with an 11-4 run after DePaul pulled within 67-59 with 8:40 left.
• No. 10 Michigan State 70, No. 21 Minnesota 58 -- At Minneapolis, Kalin Lucas scored a career-high 24 points to help the Spartans (10-2, 1-0 Big Ten) defeat the Gophers (12-1, 0-1).
Michigan State outrebounded Minnesota 49-27 and outscored it 28-18 in the paint.
• No. 19 Baylor 113, Jackson State 78 -- At Waco, Texas, Kevin Rogers scored 21, Henry Dugat had 20, and all 12 players on the Bears' roster scored as Baylor (12-1) routed the Tigers (1-11).
• No. 22 Xavier 78, Robert Morris 57 -- At Cincinnati, Jason Love and Brad Redford each scored 15 points, leading the Musketeers (10-2) past the Colonials (6-7).
• Wisconsin 73, No. 23 Michigan 61 -- At Ann Arbor, Mich., Marcus Landry and Trevon Hughes each scored 16 points to lead the Badgers (10-3) past the Wolverines (10-3) as both teams opened Big Ten play.
• No. 24 Ohio State 68, Iowa 65 -- At Columbus, Ohio, Jon Diebler scored a career-high 27 points, and Evan Turner hit three late free throws to lift the Buckeyes (10-1) over the Hawkeyes (10-4) in the Big Ten opener for both teams.
Matt Gatens, who led Iowa with 22 points, missed a tying 3-pointer with nine seconds remaining.
