QB Kaepernick accounts for three touchdowns as UNR whips Utah State
RENO -- Colin Kaepernick rushed for two touchdowns and threw for another as UNR beat Utah State 44-17 on Saturday.
Vai Taua rushed for 122 yards and a touchdown for the Wolf Pack (4-3, 2-1 Western Athletic).
After sitting out the first quarter, Kaepernick came off the bench and ran 19 yards for a touchdown. He later threw a 75-yard touchdown pass to Marko Mitchell and scored on a 1-yard run. The sophomore completed 10 of 20 passes for 197 yards with one interception.
Utah State's Diondre Borel was 19-for-38 for 262 yards and two touchdowns. His first touchdown pass pulled the Aggies (1-6, 0-3) within 13-6 with 2:27 left in the first half.
UNR answered with a six-play, 68-yard drive capped by a 10-yard touchdown run from Mike McCoy for a 20-7 halftime lead.
The Wolf Pack stretched the lead to 30-7 on a 26-yard field goal by Brett Jaekle and Kaepernick's touchdown pass to Mitchell with 5:54 left in the third quarter. Mitchell had four catches for 122 yards.
Borel's second TD pass cut the Wolf Pack lead to 37-17, but UNR's Jared Silva-Purcell picked off a Borel pass and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown for the final score.
