STAR OF THE DAY
MICHAEL PHELPS
The American swimming star tied Mark Spitz's 1972 record with his seventh gold medal of the Games, winning the 100-meter butterfly by a hundredth of a second over Serbia's Milorad Cavic with a time of 50.58 seconds.
NO LOVE FOR RUSSIA
The International Olympic Committee should punish Russia by moving the 2014 Winter Olympics out of Sochi, Russia, the co-chairs of the congressional House Georgia Caucus said.
Reps. Allyson Schwartz, D-Pa., and Bill Shuster, R-Pa., said in a joint statement they plan to file a resolution declaring that Russia's movement of troops into Georgia on the eve of the Beijing Olympics makes it an unacceptable country to host the Games.
RUNNER TESTS POSITIVE
Bulgarian middle-distance runner Daniela Yordanova has tested positive for testosterone and will not compete at the Beijing Olympics.
Team spokesman Todor Shabanski said the 1,500-meter runner was on the verge of flying to Beijing but stayed behind after the result became known.
TODAY'S BEST BET
SWIMMING
Michael Phelps attempts to set an Olympic record of eight golds in one Games when he swims the butterfly leg of the 400-meter medley relay.
