Rebels roll to 10-2 win in baseball
Ryan Scott went 5-for-5, including a home run and a double, and Tanner Peters allowed four hits in seven innings as the UNLV baseball team won its fifth straight game to open the season with a 10-2 victory over Central Michigan on Friday night at Wilson Stadium.
Scott, 1-for-7 in UNLV's four-game sweep of Maine last weekend, feasted on Chippewas' pitching. Among his five hits were a run-scoring double in the second inning and a solo homer in the seventh.
Peters (2-0) struck out nine.
■ UNLV SOFTBALL -- The Rebels split two games at the Amy S. Harrison Classic in Riverside, Calif., beating Boise State 9-0 and dropping a 4-3 decision to Cal State Northridge.
Pauline Monreal led UNLV (6-6) offensively, delivering a home run among her three hits while driving in four runs and scoring three.
Amanda Oliveto (5-2) pitched a complete game in the victory over the Broncos. Jessica O'Connor (0-4) took the loss for the Rebels in the second game.
■ UNLV SWIMMING -- The Rebel men won four of six events, including two in conference record times, to move into first place after the third day of the Mountain West championships in Oklahoma City.
No. 16 UNLV had 538.5 points, with Brigham Young (480) second and Wyoming (389.5) third.
Cody Roberts set a conference record in the 100-yard butterfly in 45.70 seconds. Andrew Morrell also set a Mountain West record in the 100 breaststroke with a clocking of 52.80.
Giacomo Gremizzi won the 400 individual medley in 3:57.77, and the Rebels also claimed the 200 freestyle relay with Steven Nelms, Charlie Tapp, Roberts and Kyle Virva combining for a time of 1:17.86.
UNLV's women, with second-place finishes in the 100 butterfly and 200 free, moved up modestly to fifth with 310 points. San Diego State led with 407.
■ UNLV MEN'S TENNIS -- Mehdi Bouras won at No. 1 singles and teamed with Bernard Schoeman to win at No. 1 doubles as the Rebels earned their biggest victory in six years by beating No. 31 Fresno State 4-3 at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
The Bulldogs were the highest-ranked team to fall to UNLV since the Rebels beat then-No. 10 Oklahoma State in 2005.
Bouras-Schoeman helped the Rebels (9-5) sweep the opening doubles competition, and Bouras then rallied from a first-set blanking to down Fresno State's Rikus de Villiers, 0-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Alex Bull at No. 5 singles and Charlie Alvarado at No. 6 singles also won for UNLV.
■ UNLV TRACK AND FIELD -- Chelsea Cassulo and Amanda Bingson finished 1-2 in the weight throw as UNLV stood in sixth place after the second day of the nine-team Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M.
The Rebels had 20 points, while Brigham Young led with 66.
Cassulo's winning throw of 65 feet, 2¼ inches was the third-best mark ever recorded in the conference championships.
Bingson's runner-up throw went 64-7¾ inches.
■ CSN BASEBALL -- The College of Southern Nevada swept a nonconference doubleheader from Pacifica College of Riverside, Calif., 12-6 and 13-6 at Morse Stadium.
Cameron Harper, Jordan Stewart and Christian Centrella had two hits apiece for the Coyotes in the opener, with Stewart driving in four runs.
Duncan Satherlie had three hits in the second game for CSN (10-5).
■ CSN SOFTBALL -- The College of Southern Nevada dropped a Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader to Salt Lake Community College, 8-2 and 20-9, at the Russell Road Recreation Center.
The Coyotes fell to 10-14 overall and 3-7 in the SWAC.
