Rebels sweep Lobos

Catcher Laura Briones hit a grand slam with two outs in the sixth inning Friday to give the UNLV softball team a 5-3 victory and a sweep over New Mexico at Eller Media Stadium.

The Rebels (25-34-1, 5-11 Mountain West Conference) won the first game 6-3 as Caitlyn Paus went 3-for-3 with two RBIs.

Heather Slettvet (4-15) pitched a one-hitter in the first game for UNLV, allowing one earned run. She struck out four and walked eight.

In the second game, Ashley Arnett (3-0) got the win with four innings of scoreless relief against the Lobos (23-22, 5-9).

• UNLV BASEBALL -- The Rebels lost 13-7 to Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, Calif., as Mustangs first baseman Wes Dorrell went 3-for-4 with two doubles and six RBIs.

Xavier Scruggs hit his 17th home run of the season for UNLV (19-26), helping the Rebels pull to within 8-5 in the fifth, but Cal Poly (20-23) took control with five runs in the bottom of the inning.

• CSN SOFTBALL -- Christina Jones and Mandy Tapia pitched the College of Southern Nevada to wins over Colorado Northwestern Community College and North Idaho College in the losers' bracket of the Region 18 Tournament in Salt Lake City.

Ashley Adams homered twice in an 11-2 win over Colorado Northwestern, and Amy Aicher hit a three-run shot in a 3-0 win over North Idaho.

CSN (30-26) will face Salt Lake Community College at 11 a.m. today in a tournament semifinal.

• CSN BASEBALL -- The 19th-ranked Coyotes (39-14, 28-10 Scenic West Athletic Conference) extended their winning streak to 13 by sweeping a doubleheader against the College of Southern Idaho (30-24, 21-17) 2-1 and 2-0 in Twin Falls, Idaho.

The teams will finish the regular season with a doubleheader today. A sweep would give the Coyotes the regular-season SWAC title.
