RedHawks rally in eighth inning to slip past 51s
Shortstop Mike McCoy's two-out error in the eighth inning allowed the decisive run to score Saturday night in the 51s' 4-3 loss to the host Oklahoma City RedHawks in a Pacific Coast League game.
With the score tied at 2 in the bottom of the eighth, Hernan Iribarren and Chris Davis each hit a double off reliever Steven Register (1-3) to account for one run. Then, after Register intentionally walked Brandon Boggs with two outs, McCoy failed to handle a grounder by Ryan Garko, allowing Davis to score and give the RedHawks (63-56) a 4-2 lead.
Las Vegas (57-64) put its first two batters on in the ninth, on a walk and a single by Aaron Mathews. After a sacrifice bunt put runners at second and third, McCoy hit a sacrifice fly. But Jarrett Hoffpauir flied to right to end the game.
Mathews went 4-for-4 and Jason Lane 3-for-4 for the 51s, who had a 10-8 edge in hits but went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position in losing for the fifth time in six games.
Las Vegas scored its other runs on an errant pickoff throw in the third and Mike Jacobs' sacrifice fly in the fifth.
Boggs and Max Ramirez hit RBI doubles in the fourth and seventh innings for Oklahoma City.
Both starting pitchers, 51s left-hander Luis Perez and RedHawks right-hander Omar Beltre, gave up two runs in seven innings.
Zachary Phillips (2-1) pitched a scoreless eighth to get the victory.
