‘RedZone’ added to menu for NFL fans

NFL junkies in the Las Vegas area just got another viewing option from Cox Communications.

Starting this season Cox will air NFL RedZone, a popular offshoot of the NFL Network, the company said Wednesday. RedZone, previously available only to satellite subscribers, will debut Sept. 12 on two channels -- 311 in standard digital definition and 779 in high definition.

RedZone allows viewers to look in on every game being played Sunday morning and afternoon. The screen is split to allow simultaneous viewing of up to eight games, but as soon as a team reaches the red zone -- within 20 yards of the end zone -- that game is blown up and featured on the full screen.

"It's really there for people like myself who are Sunday football fans," said Steve Schorr, vice president of public and government affairs for Cox's Las Vegas division. "I want to see what's going on in all the games, and that's what RedZone does."

RedZone is priced at $39.99 for the 17-week regular season ending Jan. 2. To add RedZone, Cox subscribers must already have the NFL Network as part of their package or upgrade to the Cox Advanced TV plan and subscribe to the company's Sports and Information Pak.

"I think this is an awesome deal," Schorr said. "This has been a longtime discussion between our company and the network."

Schorr said the price is set by the NFL Network and the average weekly cost of less than $2.50 is "not a bad bargain."

"It's very similar to what a fan of UFC would spend for entertainment-on-demand types of programming," said Schorr, noting the $54.95 fee for one night of a high-def Ultimate Fighting Championship card.

On the NFL Network, RedZone has been particularly popular with fantasy football devotees.

"For fantasy football fans, it's like the biggest thing in the world," Schorr said. "You can watch all of your players, so that's really cool."
