November 8, 2012 - 2:11 am
Walt Weiss was hired to replace Jim Tracy as manager of the Colorado Rockies. The team made the announcement Wednesday night after owner Dick Monfort and top officials deliberated at the general managers' meetings at a hotel Monfort owns in Indian Wells, Calif.
Weiss, the 1988 American League Rookie of the Year, and Arizona third-base coach Matt Williams, a former UNLV star, were thought to be the favorites to replace Tracy, who quit Oct. 7 after a last-place finish in the National League West.
■ PADRES - San Diego starting catcher Yasmani Grandal was suspended 50 games because of a positive test for testosterone. The commissioner's office announced the drug penalty. The ban will take effect at the start of next season.
Grandal made his big league debut this year, hitting .297 with eight home runs and 36 RBIs in 60 games. He turns 24 today.
■ METS - Outfielder Jason Bay and New York ended their unproductive relationship after three miserable seasons when they agreed to terminate the outfielder's contract with one guaranteed year left. The deal makes the 34-year-old a free agent and allows the team to spread out the remaining $21 million it owes him.
■ DODGERS - Mark McGwire was hired as hitting coach, and he will work with Los Angeles All-Star sluggers Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier.
■ TIGERS - Former Detroit slugger Delmon Young pleaded guilty to aggravated harassment for shouting an anti-Semitic slur and tackling a man outside a New York City hotel in the spring.
The 27-year-old outfielder, who became a free agent after the World Series, was ordered to complete 10 days of community service and enroll in a tolerance program.
