Shadow Ridge breaks through in final inning
Shadow Ridge's patient approach finally paid off Tuesday.
The Mustangs drew eight walks and forced Centennial's Lauren Lynds to throw 144 pitches. They finally cashed in on Ashley Huddleston's bases-loaded single with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to post a 4-3 victory over the Bulldogs.
Shadow Ridge (9-0, 3-0 Northwest Division) trailed 3-1 entering the bottom of the inning, but loaded the bases with one out on a walk to Courtney Winnett and bloop singles by Jasmine Harris and Rayna Bradshaw.
"It took a lot of patience for us to be up there in those situations," Shadow Ridge coach Cynthia Winter said. "The girls were clutch today."
Mary Jordan drew a walk to force in Winnett. Ashley Eldridge then worked an eight-pitch walk to score Harris with the tying run.
Huddleston then smacked a 3-2 pitch that one-hopped the center-field wall, bringing in Bradshaw to end the game.
"It was sheer will that got it done that last inning," Winter said. "I told them at the beginning of the inning to just take it one at a time."
Huddleston got a 10-pitch walk in her previous plate appearance.
Bradshaw's solo home run in the third gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.
Centennial (16-5, 2-1) scored twice in the fourth on an RBI double by Jenna Van Eykeren and run-scoring ground-out by Julia Bucy. A throwing error in the seventh inning allowed Centennial to stretch its lead.
