Sierra Vista falls prey to 3-point barrage

Midway through the second half of Monday's game, Sierra Vista coach Ken Gibson had one simple instruction for his team.

"Somebody watch (number) 33," Gibson yelled, referring to Mount Miguel (Calif.) junior forward Brad Barrett.

It was difficult not to watch Barrett, though. He was the one draining 3-pointers from seemingly everywhere on the floor.

Barrett made 10 of 13 3-pointers and finished with 41 points as Mount Miguel downed Sierra Vista 70-56 in the Bishop Gorman Martin Luther King Classic.

"That kid was just on fire," Gibson said. "We need to do a better job of getting out on people when they do get on fire."

Barrett scored 19 of the Matadors' first 26 points and had 24 points at the half. He made six of his first seven 3-point attempts.

He drained two more from beyond the arc in the first five minutes of the second half.

Still, the Lions were within 47-42 with 9:50 remaining before an 18-7 run by Mount Miguel put the game away.

"There's not a lot of quit in our kids," Gibson said. "We don't have a lot of athletes and we're not really big, but the kids play hard and do what we ask."

Josh McLain led Sierra Vista with 17 points. Nick Douglas and Joe White added 10 points each.

Mission Prep (Calif.) 58, Valley 53 -- At Bishop Gorman, Mission Prep made 7 of 9 free throws in overtime to pull out the win.

Terrence Tatum led Valley with 13 points. Deante Jones added 11 points and 19 rebounds.

Spring Valley 82, Durango 81 -- At Spring Valley, Marcus Moore's basket with 8.1 seconds left in overtime lifted the Grizzlies over the Trailblazers.

Jason Walter led Spring Valley with 29 points. Tenacious Gibson added 14 points. Moore and Jesse Chippoletti each scored 12.

Marcus Falley and Ron Barnes each scored 24 points for Durango.
