Silverado’s Collie comes through

In early December, Silverado's Wade Collie stepped to the foul line late against Bonanza with a chance to give his team the lead. He failed, missing the front end of a one-and-one.

Collie didn't let it happen again Friday. The junior made two free throws with seven seconds left to give the Skyhawks a 69-67 home victory over Liberty.

"Since then, I've been really working on my free throws," Collie said, referring to the 80-78 overtime loss to Bonanza. "I'm never going to lose another game because of my free throws."

The victory left the Skyhawks (17-6) in a first-place tie with Foothill (18-7) in the Southeast Division at 10-1. Liberty (17-8) is a game back at 9-2. Silverado will play at Foothill on Friday to close out the regular season.

"The only way we're losing first place is if we lose," Collie said. "So it depends on how bad we want it. And we don't plan on losing to anybody."

Collie scored 10 of his game-high 25 points in the fourth quarter, and he also had 11 rebounds. His heroics came after Liberty tied the game at 67 on a rebound basket by Justin King with 38 seconds left.

Silverado called timeout with 14.5 seconds left, got the ball to Collie in the backcourt, and he tried to take the ball to the basket against Milos Knezevic, the Patriots' 6-foot-8-inch center. Knezevic was whistled for a foul, and Collie hit both free throws for the final margin.

Liberty's Cameron Peters rimmed out a potentially tying jumper from the foul line and Collie snagged the rebound to seal the win.

Liberty led the entire first half as Silverado shot 2-for-13 on 3-pointers. But the Skyhawks heated up in the third quarter, making four 3s, including Joe Spero's heave from three-quarters court to end the quarter, giving Silverado a 54-51 lead.

"That was the first time I've ever seen a buzzer-beater past halfcourt in person," Collie said. "That was amazing. The crowd went crazy. It sparked us up and got us hyped."
