Skyhawks’ Collie clinches win

Wade Collie hit a long jumper with four seconds remaining Tuesday to lift the Triple Double Elite East of Las Vegas over the Arkansas Hawks 17s 66-64 in the Reebok Summer Championships at Green Valley.

Collie, a Silverado High senior, finished with 15 points and seven rebounds. He said he never worried about taking the final shot from the left corner.

"It was an open shot," said the 6-foot-6-inch Collie, whose team trailed by eight points before rallying late in the second half. "I practice it all the time, so I took it."

Collie, who missed a pair of easy baskets earlier in the game, said he was glad to have a chance to redeem himself.

"I missed a couple of layups, so I had to make it," he said.

Collie, being pursued by Pepperdine, Texas Southern and several other schools, actually has a history of nailing game winners.

"That's the third or fourth one I've hit over the last few years," he said. "I haven't missed a buzzer beater yet."

Triple Double coach Tyrell Jamerson, whose team will play the Illinois Bobcats in an 11:15 a.m. game today at Foothill, said the tournament is giving Collie and his top players a chance to see competition at a new level.

"Wade has to understand that there is bigger and better basketball outside of Las Vegas," the coach said.

Foothill graduate Earl Jones led the team with 16 points. Silverado junior Ali Sabra added 13 points.

Also in the Reebok tourney, Bishop Gorman junior Anson Winder scored in double figures in two wins for Triple Double Elite 16-U.

Winder had 16 points in a 72-56 win over Colorado Chaos. Palo Verde junior Drew Topham led the Elite 16-U team with 22 points.

In the team's second game, Winder had 10 points in a 78-43 rout of Brea Olinda (Calif.). Gorman classmate Xavier Grimble had 20 points.

• ADIDAS -- At Rancho, Cimarron-Memorial senior Mike Cutright scored 22 points to lead the Las Vegas Prospects past EBO (Calif.), 85-68 in the adidas Super 64 tournament.

Bishop Gorman junior Jonathan Loyd added 14 points for the Prospects, who had 11 players score.

Desert Pines senior Reggie Shaw's 17-point effort against Gym Rats Golf (N.J.) lifted Marcus Banks Hard 2 Guard to an 85-74 victory and a split of its two games.

The Marcus Banks team lost its opener to the I CAN All-Stars (Calif.), 77-74.

• MAIN EVENT -- At the Main Event tournament, Centennial graduate C.J. Hayes scored 10 points on 5-for-6 shooting to lead the Las Vegas Toros to a 68-21 win over Flagstaff (Texas) Hoops.

• SCHEDULE -- All three tournaments continue with pool play today. Bracket play begins Thursday. Championship games are slated for Saturday.
